MY DAD
I remember waiting for that time of day when
Mom would cook dinner and Dad had time to play.
We grabbed a peach from a tree – Dad’s favorite snack –
and walked gravel roads, carrying ball and bat.

Now Dad could tell stories to make me laugh,
he’d toss a few pitches, then hand off his glove
to cousins my age – to rest and sip coffee,
unwind at day’s end with a brother or sis.

When our visit was done, we’d hurry back home to
Mom’s homemade pie, bread, chicken and noodles, string beans, and milk.
Oh, those were the days! So care free and fun. But, wait . . .
there’s more to tell about this man . . . my Dad . . . Robert.

He liked to wrestle with my brother, Rob, and let
him win at checkers . . . Oops! I wasn’t s’pposed to tell.
Sometimes I caught Dad lost in thought, staring at Rob’s
toy soldiers, set for battle on Mom’s braided rug. (“Charge!”)

When my sister, Liz, came along, we all enjoyed
Dad’s version of a Fairy Tale – complete with sweet
and silly, or loud and deep voices, “Not by the hair
on my chinny, chin, chin.” Nothing sounded so good!

I remember a blizzard with snow so deep and cold,
Dad carried me on his shoulders – five blocks, I’m told,
to Grandma and Grandpa Ridgway’s house on Christmas day
so everyone could praise God, together.

Dad sang in church choir; settled city disputes; cut through red tape;
snow-plowed city streets; helped clear city sewers; built wooden book shelves;
pulled nails and screws from boards to reuse, he made our home
safe, secure, and full of life – a loving landscape.

He liked to write, enforce the peace, rake driveway sand;
He liked 50’s songs – enjoyed air shows – taught me to drive!
He made me walk that mile alone, gas can in hand,
So I’d remember to fill up the car next time. 

But my fondest memory of this man so great
is the example he set when, from scripture, he
chose to love my mother like no other, you see,
putting God first and focusing on family!!
