001Mabel Shay, daughter of George B. Reed and Ada (Bosch) Reed was born September 9, 1919 in Blockton, Iowa and passed from this life October 24, 2011 at 92 years of age. She was one of four children which was comprised of one son and three girls who were triplets. Throughout her life, Mabel was very proud of the fact that she was a Reed triplet.
She was united in marriage to William E. Shay November 24, 1945. They had one son, M. Michael.
Mabel graduated from Blockton High School in 1937. She received her Master's Degree in Education from Drake University. Mabel taught school for over forty years and retired in 1983 from the Des Moines Public Schools.
Mabel volunteered her services to many area organizations after retiring from the Des Moines School District. Some of those organizations were the hospice in Osceola, Catechism Classes at Saint Bernard, librarian at the Weldon library and writing the Weldon News. She was an avid card player and enjoyed chauffeuring her friend to pitch and bridge games. Mabel was a voracious reader, sometimes known to finish three to four books in a week with her kindle. She was also very active with her computer, sharing emails, playing scrabble and reading online news articles.
Those relatives who preceded Mabel in death were her parents, George B. Reed and Ada Reed; husband, William E. Shay; brother, John Reed; and her sisters, Ferne Straight, Wilma Clary.
Mabel leaves to cherish her memory; son, Michael (Tracy) Shay of Weldon, Iowa; grandchildren, Lance M. (Betsy) Shay of Des Moines, IA and Tracy (Matt) Drinkard of Kansas City, MO; great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn L. Drinkard; as well as many other relatives and a host of friends.
Visitation were open for the public after 12 noon on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Kale Funeral Home. The family greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.; rosary at 6:30 p.m.
Mass were held at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Friday October 28, 2011 at 10 a.m. with Father Glen Wilwerding officiating.
Interment was a private ceremony at St. Mary's Cemetery, Maloy, IA.

002Earl Marvin Lawrence Carlson, son of Lawrence A. and Anna E. (Hammergren) Carlson, was born on May 26, 1926 near Hepburn, Iowa on the family farm. He entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at the Goldenrod Manor Care Center in Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 85.
Earl’s early life was spent in the Bethesda, Iowa area where he grew up on the farm. He attended country school before attending Clarinda High School where he graduated with the Class of 1939. Following high school he farmed before honorably serving his country during World War II. He was inducted into the Army in July of 1945 and served through January of 1947 in the occupation of Germany.
On September 5, 1948, Earl was united in marriage to the love of life, Rosemary Rice, at the First Christian Church in Shenandoah. Following their marriage they farmed east of Essex for two years before moving to a farm north of Essex where they lived for 39 years until retiring to Essex in 1988. Earl and Rosemary moved to Fair Oaks Care Center in Shenandoah in 2007. Earl later moved to Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda in 2009.
With the exception of his time in the Army, Earl farmed all his life. He “retired” in 1988 when they moved to Essex, although he was never far from the action until his health prevented him from doing farm labor.
Earl was a longtime member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church and sang in the choir for many years. He was also a member of the Iowa Cattleman’s Association for many years and also served on the Page County Fair Board. He enjoyed wood working, hunting, spending time with the grandkids and playing cards.

Preceding him in death were his beloved wife Rosemary; his parents; and two sisters, Henrietta Carlson and Regina O’Malley. Earl is survived by his three sons, Steve Carlson and wife Phyllis of Clarinda, IA, Mike Carlson and wife Sandy of Essex, and Phil Carlson and wife Kendra of Valpariso, NE; eight grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; one sister, Ruthella Bersch of Essex, IA; other relatives and many friends.



Words of comfort were given by Pastor Jerry Lamb and Intern Steve Winsor. Family remembrances were given by Phil Carlson. Organist was Yvonne Johnson. Congregational hymns were "How Great Thou Art" and "This Is My Father's World". Yvonne Johnson sang "Children Of The Heavenly Father" in swedish. Attending the memory register were Joan Setterburg and Lynn Meier. Ushers were Dennis Meier and Kent Setterburg. Honorary casket bearers were all of Earl's friends. Casket bearers were Todd Carlson, Aaron Zenti, Tom Billington, Tyson Carlson, Ryan Fichter, Larry Messerley, Michael Fort and Daniel Gray. Military rites were accorded by the American Legion Post #88 of Shenandoah. Interment was in the Bethesda Lutheran Cemetery
003Mary Evalyn Saner was born on June 4, 1921, in rural Imogene, Iowa, the daughter of Joe and Maggie (Laughlin) Saner. Evalyn entered into rest on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Parkcrest Home.

Evalyn was raised on a farm in the Imogene area. She graduated in 1939 from St. Patrick’s High School in Imogene. After graduation she attended Boyle’s Business College in Omaha. She moved to Shenandoah after college.

Evalyn worked for Mt. Arbor Nurseries, Clarinda Production Credit Association, and retired from KMA Radio in 1986 after 45 years of service.

Evalyn was a life long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah. Some of her passions included woodworking, gardening, bowling, garage sales, Irish music and dance. She also enjoyed spending time with her great-nephew Brian Larson.

Evalyn was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Ambrose (Bro) Saner, John Saner and Lou Saner; sisters Angela Larson and Esther Johnson-Butler. Those left to honor her memory include her nieces and nephews Judy Halberson, Lou Saner, Jr. Rosalyn Martin, Sharon Baldwin, Ed Saner, Jane Gruber, Mike Saner, Cheryl Burkland, Linda Mason, Tom Saner, Denise Gurss, Bob Larson, Susan Etscheidt, Jim Larson, Arne Johnson, and Roger Johnson; other relatives and friends.

004Geraldine (Ness) Underwood, the daughter of Jennie Florence Kendall and Charles Edward “Ed” Ness, was born on August 30, 1917, at Randolph, Iowa and entered into rest on Friday, November 18, 2011 at Irmo, South Carolina.
Geraldine graduated from Randolph High School in 1934. The family moved to Tabor that summer. Geraldine took a post graduate secretarial course at Tabor High School, later attending and graduating from Boyles Business College in Council Bluffs. The family moved to Shenandoah in 1937.
Geraldine married Glenn Clark Underwood at Tarkio, MO., on her 21st birthday, August 30, 1938. They had one daughter Kerry Lynne.
Geraldine was a long time employee of Earl May Seed and Nursery Co. (seasonally from 1937). During WWII in 1943 she worked for a few months at the Army Air Base at Dalhart, Texas, where Clark was stationed. Then she lived with her parents in San Diego while Clark was overseas and a Prisoner Of War for 14 months. Their daughter Kerry Lynne, was born at the Naval Hospital on April 19, 1944. After Clark’s return from service the family lived in San Diego and Santa Ana, before returning to Shenandoah.
After returning to Shenandoah in 1946 Geraldine worked seasonally as a secretary in the Stores Office at May’s, and in 1954 started full time. She received her 25 year watch in 1979 and retired August 27, 1982.
Clark and Geraldine lived most of their married life in Shenandoah except a few months in Rock Port, MO.
Geraldine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clark; parents; a brother, Harry Kendall Ness; sister Elaine Mashburn; and a grandson Brett England. Survivors include her daughter Kerry Lynne England and husband Tom of Columbia, S.C.; grandsons, Brady and Bryce and wife Jenny; great grandchildren Eliza and Crosby England; several nieces and nephews.
In earlier years Geraldine enjoyed bowling. The family made many interesting camping trips during the years and have beautiful photos of the southwest. Later in years she and Clark enjoyed working on crossword puzzles.
Geraldine was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the American Ex-Prisoner of War organization.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at 11:30 a.m. at the Randolph Cemetery in Randolph, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Jaye Johnson. Special music was "How Great Thou Art". Casket bearers were Brady England, Bryce England, Dan Allen and Jeff Allen
005Roland Martin Pulley was born on March 11, 1925 in Cumberland, Iowa, the son of Martin John and Sybil Agnes (Trent) Pulley. Roland entered into the arms of his Lord on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Shenandoah Medical Center, surrounded by his loving and supportive family.

Roland’s early years were spent in the community of Lewis, Iowa. The family later moved to Shenandoah. Roland graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1943.

Roland was united in marriage to Carla Mae Messersmith on July 29, 1946 in Shenandoah, Iowa. The couple was blessed with the birth of three children Marsha, Janet, and Roland David. Roland and Carla enjoyed 65 years of marriage. During his working years he was employed by Henry Field Seed and Nursery from 1942-1945 and Earl May Seed Company from 1946-1991.

Roland was a member of All American Seed Association, served as a judge at the Page County Fair, was a member of the Shenandoah School Board, was appointed chairman & treasurer of the Wassail Bowl, was a former member of the Shenandoah Optimist Club and a member of the Congregational Church. Some of his passions included woodworking, gardening, tending to his flowers and enjoying nature.

Roland was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Edward and Loren Pulley; and sister Jean Masterson. Those left to honor his memory include his wife Carla Mae Pulley; daughters Marsha Miller and husband Terry and Janet Allumbaugh and husband Mike both of Shenandoah, IA; son Roland David Pulley and wife Kathy of Milan, IL; grandchildren, Jeff Miller and wife Amy of Shenandoah, Dana Finnegan and husband Mike of Colorado, Brent Allumbaugh and wife Ginny of Council Bluffs, Traci Haarmann and husband Gary of Independence, MO, Ben Pulley and wife Julie of Peoria, IL, Dan Pulley and wife Kaitlyn of Bettendorf, IA and Adelyn Pulley of Milan, IL; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Joy Rosenquist of Council Bluffs; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 21, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Shenandoah Congregational Church. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Mel Hurst. Attending the memory register were Dorothy Bayless and Jackie Holmes. Ushers were Mark Eno and Bill LeVere. Caring for the flowers were Mary Lou Rexroth and Doris Brodersen. Vocalist was Jack Baxer and organist was Carolee Rees. Musical selections were "In The Garden", "I'll Be Seeing You" and the congregation sang "Amazing Grace". Casket bearers were Jeffrey Miller, Dana Finnegan, Brent Allumbaugh, Traci Haarmann, Benjamin Pulley, Daniel Pulley and Adelyn Pulley. Honorary bearers were Duane Rexroth, Tom Brodersen, Marlin Holmes, John Bayless, Bill Wiechman, LeRoy McCoskey, Chuck Irvin, Bill Scharp and Darrell Jones. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. 006Alice Marie Beam Johnson was born on September 7, 1920 in Riverton, Iowa, the daughter of Sidney and Hazel (Dickerson) Beam. Alice entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Alice’s early years were spent in the Riverton community until she was 5 years old. The family then moved to Strahan, Iowa where she attended school through the 10th grade. The family then moved to Coburg where she continued her education and graduated from Coburg High School.

On August 17, 1952 she was united in marriage to Ray Johnson at the First Christian Church in Shenandoah. During her working days she was employed as a housekeeper and worked in the office at Henry Fields for many years. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Christian Women’s Fellowship (where she served as President and Vice President as well as on the Social Finance Committee) and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.

Alice enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, cooking and experimenting with new recipes, sewing, and spending time with her nieces and nephews. Alice was a caring and loving person who will be greatly missed, and lovingly remembered.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ray; and a niece and nephew in infancy. Those left to honor her memory include her sisters Dorothy Beam of Red Oak and Altha Laabs of Shenandoah; brother Leo Beam of Tipton; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends

Dr. Kenneth Joseph Lindsey, 71, Maryville, Missouri, died Saturday, November 12, 2011,  at St Francis Hospital,  Maryville, Missouri. 

Dr. Lindsey was born  August 19, 1940, in Mason, West Virginia to Joseph and Mary Nelson Lindsey.  They preceded him in death. 

A graduate of Central High School, Columbus, Ohio and Massillon Baptist College, Massillon, Ohio, he received his Masters and his Doctorate degrees from Andersonville Baptist Seminary in Marietta, Georgia.  He served as a member of the United States Army Reserve. 

He married Joyce Eversole September 26, 1959, in Ft. Knox, Kentucky.  He served as pastor for eighteen years at the 2nd Baptist Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan and fifteen years at the Temple Baptist Church, Maryville, Missouri, retiring in August of 2011. 

Dr. Lindsey is survived by his wife Joyce Lindsey of the home in Maryville; three sons: Greg (Sue) Lindsey, Carolina Shores, North Carolina; Mark (Ronda) Lindsey, Grand Rapids, Michigan and Jeff (Darlene) Lindsey, Owasso, Oklahoma; brother, Dr. Larry (Marcia) Lindsey, St. Joseph, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren: Andrew, Phillip, Sarah, Jonathan, Justin, Jordan, Rachelle, Brianna, Erika, Joseph and Tyler Lindsey; and Kylie, Aimee and Dylan Cressman; four great-grandchildren: Jayson, Aubrey, Sean and Hayleigh Lindsey. 

Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 15, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville, Missouri. 

Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, November 16th, at the East Side Baptist Church in St. Joseph, Missouri. 

Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Columbus, Ohio.

Francis L. Martin of Des Moines Iowa formally of Maryville, Missouri passed from this earth to his heavenly home on November 13, 2011. Francis was born February 1, 1919 near Burlington Junction, Missouri to John Byron martin and Evie Elizabeth (Spangler) Martin. He met, fell in love with Ida Frances Drummond and they were married in Maryville Missouri on May 25, 1940. The have two children Sharon Kay Failor of Lebanon, Tennessee and Carl Lynn Martin of Des Moines Iowa. Francis was a member of Laura Street Baptist Church Maryville and in recent years attended Grace Baptist Church in Des Moines, Iowa. His early life was shaped by the Great Depression where he worked at breaking horses, in the Missouri coal mines and managing a ranch before taking up farming for several years. After leaving the farm he worked at St Frances Hospital in Maryville Missouri for twenty years before retiring. In retirement he found great enjoyment in family, friends and working with his flowers.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his sister Cleta Lucille Spratt and son-in-law Richard Failor. His is survived by His Daughter Sharon Failor, Son Carl Martin and Daughter-in-law Claudia Martin, seven grand -children: Linda (Jeff) Holder, Joyce (Bert) Patton, Stephanie Martin, Courtney (Adam) Clarke, Jenifer (Alvaro) Ortiz, Mathew (Beth) Christian, and Zachary (Renee) Gates. Plus twelve great-grand-children and with the thirteenth on the way and one great-great-grand child. A brother in-law Robert Drummond and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 PM Thursday November 17,2011 with visitation preceding at 1:00 PM at Price Funeral home, 120 E. First Street., Maryville Missouri. With burial to follow at High Prairie Cemetery, Elmo, Missouri .

Additionally a special Memorial service for friends and family will be held in Des Moines Iowa at 10:00 AM, Friday November 18, 2011, at Grace Baptist Church 112 County Line Rd. Donald Warren Stewart, 69, Tipton, Missouri, formerly of Clearmont, Missouri, died Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at the Capital Region Medical Center, Jefferson City, Missouri.

Born April 27, 1942, he was the son of John and Elsie Abbott Stewart.

He was a graduate of Clearmont High School, and worked for 20 years with the Braddyville Oil Company and then for 10 years with Trex-Mart, also in Braddyville.

Donald was a member of the Clearmont Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Michael Stewart.

Surviving him are his son Shawn Stewart and daughter Darla (David) Reynolds, both of St. Joseph, Missouri; granddaughter Ashley (Richard) Hostikka, Las Vegas, Nevada; two great-grandchildren: Savannah and Brock Hostikka; brothers: Larry (Carolyn) Stewart, Gravois Mills, Missouri; Harold (Marcia) Stewart, Kansas City, Missouri; Richard Stewart, Clearmont, Missouri and James Stewart, Kansas City, Missouri.

Patricia Ruth Wilmes, 77, Ravenwood, Missouri died on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at Village Care Center, Inc in Maryville, Missouri.

Patricia was born April 23, 1934 in Maryville, Missouri to Alphonsus and Eunice Miller Madden. She married William "Bill" Wilmes February 9, 1954 at St. Patrick's Church, Maryville, Missouri.

A graduate of Ravenwood High School and Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, she was a homemaker and an educator teaching in the Stanberry School District for twenty one years before retiring.

She was a member of the St. Columba Catholic Church and Altar Society, Conception Junction, Misssouri Parkinson's Support Group and the Missouri State Teachers Association.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers Don, Jerry and Jim Madden.

Surviving are her husband Bill Wilmes of the home at Ravenwood, Missouri, three sons Dr. Jerry (Robin) Wilmes, Maryville, Larry (Peggy)Wilmes, Ravenwood, and Jerome (Karol) Wilmes, Skidmore, and daughters Cathy (Chris) Oelze, Margie (Wayne) Canon, Ravenwood, Alice (Mark) Schieffer, Maryville, 22 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren, brother Kenny (Carol) Madden, Stanberry, Missouri, sisters Martha (Bob) Pope, and Edna Schafer, Maryville, and Mary Coleman, Savannah, Missouri, Barbara (Jerry) O'Connell, Maryville, Carole (Byron) Duke, St. Joseph, Missouri, Ellen (Jim) Bolger, Savannah, two sisters- in- law Wilma Madden, Mankato, Minnesota, and Connie Madden, St. Joseph.

Lillie Wilma Goff, 92, Burlington Junction, Missouri, died Thursday, November 17, 2011, at Nodaway Nursing Home, Maryville, Missouri.

Wilma was born May 31, 1919, in Geneva, Nebraska, to Eddy and Clara Belle Whited Beason.

She married Theodore Lafayette Goff on February 25, 1946, in Troy Kansas. She was a Nurse Aid and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in Maryville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Theodore Goff (March, 1969); granddaughter Kristen Goff, son-in-law James Curram, eight brothers: Lee, Ora, Howard, Richard, Vernon, Alvin, Everett and Ralph Beason; and three sisters: twin sister Martha Beason, Iva Barnett and an infant sister.

Survivors include: two sons: Frederick (Patsy) Goff, Kinglsand, Texas and Roger (Connie) Goff, Burlington Jct., Missouri; two daughters: Iva Lou Curram, Maryville, Missouri and Alice Jean (Wayne) Brunk, Westboro, Missouri.

Ruth Elizabeth Hall, 89, Maryville, Missouri, died Friday, November 18, 2011, at Hillcrest Manor, Hamilton, Missouri.

Ruth was born April 2, 1922, in Rock Port, Missouri to Churchill Oliver and Lillie Lee Funderburke Breazeal. She was a homemaker and also served as a waitress at the Market Street Cafe for 17 years.

She married Joseph Hall on Saturday, November 29, 1941, in Rock Port, Missouri. He preceded her in death on January 16, 1995. Ruth was a member of the Rock Port Baptist Church, Rock Port, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Joe Hall and is survived by several nieces and nephews.

John W. (Jay) Law 81, of Skidmore, MO passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Maryville, MO.

Jay was born on July 27, 1930 in Worth County, MO and was a lifelong resident of the area. His parents were Ray and Trixie Rose (Phillips) Law.

Jay graduated from Worth County High School, and was a retired self employed trucker and farmer. He was a member of the Denver Missouri Christian Church, and was proud to be a life member of Skidmore Masonic Lodge #511 AF & AM, Skidmore, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Raymond Law, his sister Irene Thrasher, and 2 brother in law’s, Bill Thrasher and C.A. McCleary; and his son Ronnie Law.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis A. (Smith) Law, of the home. Jay and Phyllis were married on October 30, 1949 in Worth County, MO. Son, John (Pam) Law, Skidmore, MO, daughter, Kathryn (Gerald) Magee, Kearney, MO; his sister, Opal McCleary, Dallas, TX, sister in law Doris Sanders, Gladstone, MO; 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and a special thank you to his niece, Karen Fletchall, Denver, MO.

Graveside services and burial will be at 10:30 AM Friday, November 25, 2011 at the High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry, MO. Zella Mae Bomar Hilsenbeck 93, of Maryville, MO and formerly of the Whitesville, MO area, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2011 at the Golden Living Center, Maryville.

Zella was born on April 28, 1918 in Fillmore, MO to Alva and Fleeta A. (Wright) Bomar. She and her husband farmed for 51 years south of Whitesville, MO before moving to Maryville in 1998.

On March 16, 1936, Zella was united in marriage to Elvin Bruce Hilsenbeck in Savannah, MO. They spent 65 years together before his death in 2001. Zella was also preceded in death by her parents; 3 siblings, Lloyd Bomar, Lavella Rauch, and Melvin Bomar; and her son in law, Herb Roup.

Zella was a homemaker; she loved to quilt, crochet, and to cook for large groups of family, friends, and farmhands. She was a former member of the Widowed Person Group of Maryville.

Zella dearly loved her kids, grandchildren, and was proud to be a 5th generation family.

Lavern (Vern) Dale Hughes 74, of Maryville, MO passed away Thursday, November 17, 2011 in Maryville. Vern was born on December 11, 1936 in Hopkins, MO to Dale Lewis and Edith Venita (Heggs) Hughes both of Bedford, IA.

Lavern attended country school, and graduated from Bedford High in 1955 along with his two sisters Joyce Ann and Judith Kay. Lavern was in 4-H, showed calves, and attended FFA through high school. Vern worked for various farmers, rented 80 acres and built up a 10 cow herd.

After graduation he took Basic Training in the National Guard. He then worked at the Cudahay Plant in Bedford, IA. He attended and graduated Clarinda Junior College in 1956.

In August 1958, Laverne married JoAnne Morgan in Clarinda, IA. He attended Iowa State University and graduated in 1960. He taught high school vocational agriculture at Scranton, IA for one year. He was then employed by Farm Credit Administration in Omaha, NE and Ottumwa, IA. Lavern later opened and managed a Production Credit Field Office in Chariton, IA., and purchased a farm in 1966.

In August of 1970, Lavern married Donna Massey of Derby, IA. He became Vice-President and loan officer of the Corydon State Bank at Corydon, IA. Five years later, the bank sold and Vern then operated a concrete block plant for a year.

In 1977, he was employed by the Iowa Department of Revenue in Des Moines, IA., as an agent, auditor and supervisor of all corporation audits outside of Iowa. He kept his Chariton farm for several years, but lived and worked in Des Moines.

In 1992, he sold the last of his farm ground and acquired a mobile home park East of Des Moines. In 1996, he sold the park, retired and moved to Maryville, MO. Lavern built a four-plex and remodeled three houses in Maryville, where he was fortunate to make many friends. In 2000, Lavern build a new home in Maryville. He became active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie # 3669 where he held most offices and was Secretary for the past five years. He enjoyed golfing, dancing and spending time with his Eagle family, where he found a wonderful love and partner in Betty Wiederholt.

Vern was proceded in death by his parents, and a daughter, Nancy Ann.

Vern is survived by two sisters, Joyce Ann (Charlie) Cervantes, Maryville, MO, and Judith Kay (Lynn) Schoening, Round Rock, TX; his nieces and nephews, Anthony (Alisande) Cervantes, Topeka, KS; Lisa (Mike) Pekish, San Pedro, CA, Amber Cervantes and son, Ronald Purnell, Kansas City, MO; Lynnette Rabb and son Spencer Schoening of Georgetown , TX and daughters Tiffany(Matt) Stillwell and sons Hudson, Truman, and Wyatt, Austin, TX and Nicole (Christopher) Thies and daughter Dilynn and son Oliver, Austin Texas.

Since February 2011, Vern has fought a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Ramona Job 72, of Maryville, MO passed away unexpectedly Friday, November 11, 2011, at the Heartland Regional Hospital in St. Joseph, MO.

Ramona was born to June 2, 1939 in Maryville, to Raymond Lewis and Hazel Roberta (Livengood) Job. She graduated from Maryville High School and attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.

She had worked as an operator, and then was the dispatcher for the frame board at the former United Telephone Service. She was employed for over 40 years in Maryville, Ferrelview, and Warrensburg, MO. She moved back to Maryville when she retired.

Ramona was preceded in death by her parents, and a nephew, Jobie Lewis Gaukel.

Left to mourn her passing is her sister, Judith L. Job, Maryville, MO; and her brother, William R. (Donna) Job, Maryville, MO. Frances Katherine Espey 92, of Maryville, MO passed from this life on Monday, November 1, 2011 at the St Francis Hospital, Maryville.

Frances was born on January 25, 1919 in Hopkins, MO, to William Riley and Nora Naomi (Oxley) Williams, she had lived all of her life in northwest Missouri.

On September 4, 1938, Frances was united in marriage to Eugene M. Espey in Maryville, they spent 58 years together until his death on April 28, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Paul Williams, and Herman Williams; 2 sisters Evelyn Birkenholz, and Helen Sample.

Frances was a Hopkins High School graduate and had attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. She was a member and attended the First United Methodist Church, Maryville, and was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Seth Ray David VFW Post 442, Maryville.

She was the co-owner of the Farmers Elevator Company in Hopkins, and the Farmers Produce and Feed Company in Maryville. She had worked at the elevator for many years, even after they sold the business.

Left to mourn her passing is her daughter, Gail and husband, Randall Ingram, Maryville, MO. Three grandchildren, Travis and wife, Shannon Ingram, Maryville, MO, Tyler and wife, Courtney Ingram, Maryville, MO, and Mollie and husband, Hugh O’Donnell, Prairie Village, KS; brother, George Williams, Maryville, MO; sister, Dorothy Mick, Savannah, MO; six great granddaughters, Stephanie, Shanna, Presley, Jersey, Grace, Journey; and one great grandson, Jet Ingram; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jayden was born in Maryville on October 8, 1998; his parents were Jeremy Wayne Ebrecht, and Sharee Janae Volner. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Fred and Dana Ebrecht; and maternal great grandmother Nellie Sticken.

Jayden loved his family and Spiderman.

David L. Damgar 45, of Maryville, MO passed away from cancer on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at the Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph, MO.

David was born on July 27, 1966 in Maryville, MO and lived most all of his life in the area. His parents were Ralph E. and Eileen C. (O’Riley) Damgar, Ralph passed away in 1990. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Earl P. and Junia W. Damgar, and his maternal grandparents, Fred J. and M. Lucile O’Riley.

David graduated in 1984 from Maryville High School. He had worked for many years at Midwest Striping, and had for the past seven years been employed at Kawasaki Manufacturing, Maryville. He loved the outdoors and playing ball with his friends.

On June 4, 2011, David was united in marriage to Eva R. Hart in Maryville, she survives of the home.

020Virginia Belle Meek was born March 13, 1924, the daughter of Claudie and Janie Thomas in the Gaynor, Missouri area. She departed this life at her home in Grant City, Mo., on November 17, 2011 at the age of 87 years, eight months and four days.
After graduating school she was a beautician in the Parnell area and later worked at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville until her marriage to Robert Meek on April 10, 1955. They were engaged in farming in the area until they moved to Lyons, Colo., in 1970. While living there she worked for the Postal Service and she enjoyed the mountains near her home.
They returned to Grant City in 1990 where she resided until her death. She was a very loving and devoted wife. She loved arts and crafts and did some beautiful paintings and also ceramic work. She also loved to read and always had a stack of books close by.
Virginia is survived by her husband of the home, sister-in-law Donna Robertson of Grant City; niece Kathy Tino (Ed) of Clarinda, Iowa; three nephews, Gary Robertson of Grant City, Stephen Robertson (Candace) of Warrensburg, Mo., and Danny Meek of North Carolina, and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Estelle and brother-in-law Dwight Sheirbon, brother-in-law Truman Robertson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Marion and Pauline Meek, and nephews Ronnie and Dennis Meek.

021Thelma M. Hentschke, 78, of Omaha, Neb., passed away on November 16, 2011 in Omaha. She was born May 25, 1933 in Page County, Iowa, the youngest of twenty children born to Albert and Ida Herzberg.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, eleven brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her husband, Wilfred; son, Kurt and daughter-in-law Shari; son, Mark; granddaughter, January and grandson-in-law Bipin Thapa; granddaughter, Sara and grandson-in-law John Chappelle; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Adairah, Norah, and John; three brothers, two sisters as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation was held on Sunday, Nov. 20 at Braman Mortuary in Omaha, with Celebration of Life services held Monday, Nov. 21 at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Omaha. Pastor Leroy Gerner officiated, honorary pallbearers were Rosella Hemmen, Pamela Tritsch, Debra Reed, Reasa Sturm, Marlene Hansen, Shirley Swanson, Janis Swanson and Carol Donovan.

022Nicole Ann Fitzwater, the daughter of Jessie Bruce Fitzwater and Barbara Noel Boyce, was born November 16, 2011, at the Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was accepted into God’s hands the same day surround by her family.
Surviving Nicole are her parents Jessie and Barbara of Villisca; grandparents: Roxann Boyce of Corning and Bruce and Jennifer Fitzwater of Villisca; great grandparents: Bill and Chlorina Fitzwater of Villisca and Barbara Coleman of Corning; aunts and uncles: Ashley Fitzwater, Steven Fitzwater, Matthew Boyce, Marcus Boyce, Desiree Burch and Stuart Haley. Odas was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Grace Lucille, two sons, Joseph and Everett Lilly, and two brothers, Charles and Joe Ben Lilly.

Martha Elizabeth Matthews was born September 23, 1920, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. She was one of four children (two boys and two girls) born to William Frederick Matthews and Margaret (Douglass) Matthews. She grew up attending school, graduating from Bethel High School in Bethel Township, Pennsylvania. After graduation, Martha went to work as a telephone switchboard operator for Bell Telephone Company. A position she enjoyed and held for many years.
Martha moved to Taylor County, Iowa from Washington County, Pennsylvania to be near her brother in 1976. She moved onto the family farm south of Bedford and lived there until her retirement when they moved into Bedford. Martha enjoyed reading and traveling to see relatives. She possessed a good sense of humor and often was very quick witted. Although Martha never married or had children of her own, she loved spending time with her nieces and nephews. She especially enjoyed reading to them when they were younger. She was a member of the United Christian Presbyterian Church and the Thursday Club.
Left to cherish Martha's memory are her two brothers, David Leroy Matthews and William Calvin Matthews; along with many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Preceding Martha in death are her parents William Frederick and Margaret Matthews; a sister, Mary Cabeen and brother-in-law, Richard Cabeen; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Matthews.

025Patricia Jean (Delehant) Erickson was born on April 15, 1942 in Imogene, Iowa, the daughter of Michael and Mary (Ryan) Delehant. Pat entered into eternal rest on Monday, November 28, 2011 at her home in Clinton, Iowa at the age of 69 years.

Pat’s early years were spent in Imogene, where she attended school. She graduated from St. Patrick’s Academy with the Class of 1960. She attended Barnes Beauty School in Council Bluffs where she received her cosmetology license.

Pat began her hairdressing career by working at Beauty By Betty. She later fulfilled her dream of owning and operating her own salon, The Styling Station in Shenandoah. She later went to work with Ina Rhea Whitehill at Brodersen’s Beauty Shop. Most recently she was working at Family Afhair in Clinton.

While living in Shenandoah Pat was a member of the Saddle Club in Council Bluffs and the Nishna Valley Saddle Club in Shenandoah. She was also a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed fishing with the grandchildren, playing tennis, shopping, train trips, eating out and overnight stays. Most recently she was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Clinton. She was devoted to her faith and enjoyed spending time with her three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Rosemary Mauer; brother-in-laws Dareld Mauer and Willis Hurst. 026Rose Mary (Kelly) Driskell, age 81, passed away November 26, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Red Oak, Iowa.

Rose was born to Fred and Edith (Hill) Kelly on October 15, 1930 in Gillette, Wyoming. The family moved to southern Missouri and Rose attended a one room school up through the eighth grade.

On February 27, 1951, Rose married Hue Wayne Driskell in Salam, Arkansas, and to this union three daughters, Mary, June and Ellen were born. They resided in West Plains, Willow Springs, Cabool, and Tarkio, Missouri before moving to Shenandoah, Iowa in 1970.

For many years Rose worked for Rawlings in Willow Springs along with her sister Maggie. Rose also worked many years for Mount Arbor Nursery and at Farm Masters in Shenandoah.

Preceding Rose in death were her husband, Hue Wayne Driskell in 2005; her parents, Fred and Edith Kelly; her brothers, Ott, John and Holmer Kelly; sisters, Edna, Maggie, Fern, Edith and Eva; and son-in-law, George Buchta of Idaho.

027Katherine “Kathy” Coodey, age 67, entered into eternal peace on November 23, 2011 at Shenandoah Medical Center.

Kathy was born December 16, 1943 in Sacramento, California to Jesse Joseph Lloyd and Aveia Ragsdale. She married Walter Lee Coodey, II on April 28, 1980.

During her working years she was employed by Yellow Cab as a taxi driver, a job she really enjoyed. Kathy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Shenandaoh, Iowa. She loved collecting figurines of angels and cooking for family and friends. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Kathy was preceded in death by a step-son; William George Coodey.

Byron Erman Bird, age 90, of Maryville, Missouri, died November 29, 2011, at Golden Living Care Center in Maryville.

Byron was born in Parnell, Missouri on February 17, 1921, to Viron Erman Bird and Edna (Busby) Bird.

A 1938 graduate of Maryville High School, he also graduated from the University of Iowa in 1946. During World War II Byron served in the 128th Field Artillery Unit of the 75th Infantry Division in the European Theater. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Byron worked for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for two years, and he farmed in the Graham area for thirteen years. He retired from the Postal Service in 1981, serving twenty-six years as Postmaster in the Graham and Hopkins areas.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Mary Frances Todd Bird April 9, 1983, whom he married on October 9, 1942, his parents, his brother Viron Edward Bird and his sister Virginia Bird Helzer.

Byron was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Maryville, singing in the Choir for many years. He was a 50 year member of the Nodaway Masonic Lodge #470 AF & AM. Byron was a charter member of the Graham Lions Club and a former member of the Maryville Optimist Club. He delivered Meals on Wheels and was a volunteer for Road to Recovery.

Thelma was born July 24, 1919 in Fall River, Kansas, to the late William and Julia Bush Cornett. She married Egbert Hanes on July 12, 1939 in Topeka, Kansas

A homemaker, Thelma enjoyed collecting birds, angels, and dolls. She was a member of the Ravenwood United Methodist Church and the Oxford Quilt Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents, brothers Clarence and Warren Cornett, sister Dorothy Morton, and daughter-in-law Dannie Hanes.

Surviving are sons George William "J.R." (Janice) Hanes, Skidmore, Missouri, and Eldon S. Hanes, Bedford, IA, daughters, Marifaye (Steve) Wisemore, Kansas City, MO and Kathy Dennis Ravenwood, brothers Charles Cornett and Calvin Cornett, Klamath Falls, Oregon, and sister Doris Ecton, Fall River, Kansas.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, December 1, 2011 at the Price Funeral Home, Maryville with a visitation from 7-8:00 PM on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery, Ravenwood

Roger Lee Brown, 59, Maryville, Missouri, died Sunday, November 27, 2011, after a yearlong courageous battle with malignant melanoma.

Roger was born July 31, 1952, in Maryville to James Homer and Mary Ellen (Shores) Brown.

A 1970 graduate of Nodaway Holt High School, Graham, he was a contractor, and from 1986 to the present, he owned and operated Roger Brown Contracting, Maryville.

Roger married Cathy Clements March 21, 1971 at the Barnard, Missouri Methodist Church. To this union were born two children, Heather and Jason. On September 12, 1986, he married Marva Walker in Weston, Missouri. They have one daughter, Christina.

An avid bowler, he was a member of the Nodaway A Men's Bowling League of Maryville.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his wife Marva Brown of the home, Maryville; 3 children:Jason (Roxann) Brown, Maryville; Heather (Jim) Knickerbocker, Raymore, Missouri; and Christina Brown, Springfield, Missouri; mother Mary Ellen Brown, Maryville; 4 grandchildren: Michael and Zachary Knickerbocker, Raymore and Decker and Koren Brown, Maryville; brother Joe (Mariann) Brown, Hopkins, Missouri; 3 sisters: Jean (Jack) LaFlesch, Las Vegas, Nevada; Ada (Owen) Hines and Louise Deen, both of Maryville.

Visitation will be 6:00-7:00 PM, Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at Price Funeral Home, Maryville.

Virginia Frances Warehime, 98, Maryville, Missouri, died Sunday, November 27, 2011, at St Francis Hospital, Maryville.

Virginia was born July 2, 1913, in Stanford, Montana to King Vance Franklin Dillon and Kitty Estelle (Pew) Dillon. She was later adopted by Jesse Othello and Ida Bell Miller.

A 1931 graduate of Maryville High School and 1933 graduate of Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri. She had been a daycare provider and seamstress, specializing in the re-weaving of flaws in all fabric types. She was a member of the Maryville First United Methodist Church.

Virginia married her first husband, Clyde Sparks July 18, 1934 in Maryville and her second husband, Merlin Warehime December 27, 1951, also in Maryville. They both preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her four sisters: Eula Bowman, Ivadelle Parker, Velma Kneale and Ida Stevenson and three brothers: Erman Miller, Dean Dillon and Harry Dillon.

Surviving her are two sons: Robert (Kiyoko) Sparks, Erie, Colorado and William (Sarah) Sparks, Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter Merla (Bill) Findley, Maryville, eight grandchildren: Nina Garfield, Tad Sparks, Tasha Sparks, Brett Sparks, Dawn Slezak, Renee Hutson, Daron Hall and Cara Phillips; seventeen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister Dorothy McPherson, Reno, Nevada and step-sister Mable Walton, Troy, Missouri.

Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 pm, Wednesday, November 30th, with the Funeral Services following at 2:00 pm, all at Price Funeral Home, Maryville

Helga Regatta Alford, Maryville, formerly of Barnard, Missouri died November 24, 2011, at Parkdale Manor Care Center, Maryville, Missouri.

Born November 25, 1914 in Tulstrip, Denmark, Helga was the daughter of the late Jens and Johanna Jensen Pedersen. Helga came to the United States in 1917.

On July 25, 1950 she married Donald "Stacy" Alford in Troy, Kansas. Helga was of the Lutheran faith and a homemaker.

Mrs. Alford was preceded by son Eugene Reed, four sisters, and five brothers.

Surviving are son Donald Alford, Barnard, MO, and daughter Alice Lance, Forsyth, MO, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial will be will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, December 2, 2011 at the Barnard American Legion Cemetery, Barnard

Gary Lee Carmichael, 65, Maryville, Missouri, died December 10, 2011, at Heartland Regional Medical Center, Saint Joseph.

Gary was born December 29, 1945, in Maryville to Homer Leroy and Evelyn Marie Logan Carmichael. They preceded him in death. He was a 1963 graduate of Maryville High School.

Surviving Gary are his sister Patricia Kay Hinkle, Savannah, Missouri; niece Debbie Sturgis and nephew Rick Hinkle, both of Hopkins, Missouri.

Charles A. Runyon, born in Maryville, Missouri on October 4, 1933 to William L. Runyon and Mary B. Barrett, passed November 22, 2011. He had 2 brothers, Robert and Bill Runyon.

The family moved to Calif. where Charles lived and worked for 47 years. He graduated from Richmond High School, joined the Air Force, where he served as a Staff Sargent from 1954 - 1957. He then went to U.C. Berkeley where he received his teaching degree. He retired as an art teacher after 29 years of teaching at San Lorenzo U.S.D. Charles was a member of the National Wildlife Federation and Audubon Society for many years.

Charles was preceded in death by: his parents Mary Ellen Barrett Runyon and William Louis Runyon; brothers, Robert and Bill Runyon. He is survived by: nieces, Lynn Dillon, Janet Heckler and Janice Russell; nephews, David, Carl and William Runyon; and long-time friend Joseph Medina.

Charles was a photographer and artist. He loved to paint and did many beautiful pictures. He loved to paint pictures of the photographs he took on his many trips. Charles was a truly kind and gentle man who was always ready to lend a helping hand. He will be lovingly missed by all.

Friends and family are invited to a visitation between 1-4 pm on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Wilson & Kratzer Mortuaries, Civic Center Chapel, 455 24th Street, Richmond, CA. Charles will be flown to Missouri where he will be buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in Skidmore, Missouri next to his mother and father. Marzella Jean Partridge, 82, Maryville, Missouri, died Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at Village Care Center, Inc, Maryville, Missouri.

Jean was born May 19, 1929, in Graham, Missouri, to Levi Frank and Goldie Lea Baublitts Donaldson.

Jean was a member of the Community of Faith Church and a Licensed Practical Nurse retiring from St. Francis Hospital in Maryville.

She was preceded death by her parents, grandson Nathan Kirk, two brothers: Marshall Bruce and John "Jack" Clayton Donaldson and one sister Nell Shennon.

Survivors include six children, Laura (Garry) Middleton, Cove, OR, Linda Kwak, Chicago, IL, Carol (Terry) Edwards, Canton, IL, Robert (Laurie) Ringgold, Barnard, MO, John Ringgold, Maryville, MO, and Lisa (Rick) Schoonover, Lewistown, IL.
