Larry Wayne Van Fosson was born June 11, 1948 at Elmo, MO, as the youngest son of Carl (Bud) Van Fosson and Ferne (Burley) Van Fosson. He grew up in the area attending Braddyville schools during elementary and then attended and graduated from South Page High School in 1966. He continued his education and graduated from Nettleton Business School of Omaha in 1969.

Larry and Patricia Riddle met in 1965 and started dating, becoming high school sweethearts and married on March 2, 1968 at Braddyville Methodist Church. Larry immediately became brother, mentor, friend and second "father" to the Riddle clan. They remained married for 44 plus years with Pat by his side throughout their life together and was his most dedicated supporter especially during the very difficult and trying years of his cancer journey. Together they gained a wonderful family of their own through those years. They became blessed with three daughters, Jennifer, Amy and Tricia. Tricia married Denny Fast in 1999 and Jennifer married Kevin Roelfs in 2001. Larry gained two wonderful sons in laws, leading to his most prized possessions, 3 grandchildren. Olivia Paige was born in 2002 to Jennifer and Kevin. Dawson Michael was born in 2003 and Reganne Nicole was born in 2007 to Tricia and Denny. Amy their middle child, was a constant in his life, as she shared the home, took care of the pets and all around was a great daughter, aunt and sister in law. She supported her father in his day to day struggles, laughter and tears.

Larry started his career working for Bonus Oil Company in Omaha Nebraska before working with his brothers and father as owners of Van Farm Supply, Braddyville, Iowa. Following the sale of the business, Larry was an implement salesman for Whipp Sales and Services and Case IH. His most recent occupation was as owner of an insurance agency for 22 years.

One of Larry's greatest passions was his family. He attended all his children's activities, especially their sporting events for over 10 years, often needing to "intervene" with the referee's decisions when they didn't seem right. He was also active in his children's 4-H activities, including raising and showing sheep at the County Fair, and helping make food projects that won many blue ribbons. Larry maintained a genuine interest in his children's friends, and was considered a "second" dad to many.

He continued to attend his grandchildren's events as he could, even as he endured cancer treatments. One of his greatest gifts to his grandchildren was to take them on several vacations to areas that he loved in his own youth and wanted to share with them. He was able to plan, and enjoy trips with them to South Dakota, Minnesota, Colorado and Lake Rathbun. Many incredible memories were made and will be shared for a lifetime.

Larry was involved in Lions Club, held office on the City Council in Braddyville, was the Braddyville City Clerk for several years and coached his daughters in little league softball. Larry was always friendly and didn't know a stranger. He had a sense of humor that was contagious and enjoyed giving a "hard time" to all those he loved. Larry could go anywhere within the United States and find someone that he knew, somehow.

Larry was an avid golfer and was a fixture on the golf course for many years on Wednesdays/weekends spending quality time with his friends. Due to cancer, he had to stop playing golf, but a golf event was created by his family in his honor to raise money for ACS/Relay for Life. Stopping golfing was very hard for him, and he shared his love of golfing with his sons in law and grandchildren.

Larry was a lover of all sports, especially golf, football, basketball, baseball and any other sport that happened to be on TV. He was a strong supporter of his Iowa Hawkeye's and attended games throughout his life with friends and his daughter Jennifer. He passed on his love for the Hawkeye's with Jennifer and her daughter Olivia, who at 9 has determined she will attend the University of Iowa when she graduates. Amy shares a love of the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the three girls vow to attend a bowl game in the future years together in honor of their dad and grandfather.

His love of sports was shared with his only grandson Dawson and he attended his first NW Bearcats football game with Dawson and Denny. They loved to talk sports and shared a passion for watching football. Larry attended Dawson's baseball and flag football games throughout the season, cheering him on to victory and being very proud of his determination and skills.

Larry had a big sweet tooth which Reganne, his youngest granddaughter shared with him. He tended to spoil her with all her favorite treats over the years and had a special bond with her and her spirit. They spent many special moments together during their limited time.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ferne and his brothers Lowell and Gordon.

Left to carry on the family love and values that Larry believed in so much are his loving wife, Pat, daughter and family Jennifer, Kevin and Olivia (Newton), daughter Amy (of the home), daughter and family Tricia, Denny, Dawson and Reganne (Burlington Junction, MO). Also survived by Garold and Garth Van Fosson (brothers) and their families, Joann Van Fosson-sister in law and family (Ralston, NE) and the entire Riddle Clan (which is too many to mention, but were greatly loved) and the many other people whose life he touched.

018Johnston, Lyman T. -

Lyman T. Johnston of Cotati, California died unexpectedly on July 5 at the age of 84. He was born in a log cabin on a Wyoming homestead. His grandfather trapped beavers and used the skins to cloth and protect Lyman against the frequent temperatures of more than fifty below zero. The family spent the depression years of the 1930's on a subsistence dairy farm in Iowa fighting drought, dust storms and the lack of amenities such as
plumbing, ranning water, electricity or paved roads. During World War II Lyman's father enlisted in the Navy and served in the invasion of Saipan. Lyman joined the Army and was sent to Camp Carson in Colorado to train with the Tenth Mountain Division for the invasion of Japan. The dropping of the Atomic bomb changed these plans. Lyman's three closest friends in high school and a cousin, who was raised with him, all died in the Ardennes Battle in France. This was a constant reminder to him of the price we may sometimes have to pay in behalf of the country he treasured. Lyman graduated from Drake University in Iowa where he received the Sears prize as the top student in his class and from Harvard Law School. He then practiced law in the Territory of Alaska and in the states of Washington and California for more than 50 years. He worked for two county governments, two state agencies, and five federal agencies. He was the chief criminal prosecutor in the fourth largest county in Washington and was a supervisor in the State Attorney General's Office. Lyman married Ruthanne Cole in 1962. They were blessed with five children and numerous grandchildren. In 1983 Santa Clara County in California, where they resided for 26 years, named them as Family of the Year because of the civic involvement of Lyman and Ruthanne and all of their children.
In addition to his immediate family, Lyman is survived by his sisters, Beverly Koshatka of Iowa City, Iowa; Mary Stroburg (Eldon) of Blockton, Iowa; and Phoebe Hagen (Robert) of Boyton Beach, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyman T. Johnston, Sr. and Vivian McElroy Johnston and his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Swanson and Lynn Swanson.

They were in Kellerton one year with Johnny as Superintendent and then moved back to Bedford in 1966 where Johnny was a Superintendent and Addie Mae taught elementary music. They only missed two times in 40 straight summers. Back in the early years, Addie Mae was afraid of the water and waves and rode with a life jacket and white knuckles for many a fishing trip. However, she finally got accustomed to the boat and was right there at the dock waiting to board.
In 2002, Johnny and Addie Mae celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. A wonderful dinner celebration was held with family and friends as well as a final family vacation to Canada with all 25 family members in attendance. Johnny passed away on March 5, 2003.

022Day, Opal Leona Huber -

Opal born on November 26, 1917 at Clarinda, Iowa, the oldest daughter of Ernest & Nellie (Kerns) Huber. Opal grew up in the Gravity-Sharpsburg area and graduated from Sharpsburg High School in 1935. Opal was united in marriage to Vernon Leslie Day on February 16, 1940 in Clearfield, Iowa. To this union seven children were born; Joyce Darlene, Gary Dale, Norman Dean, Carol Jean, Doyle Richard, Gale Lynn, and Lyle Vernon. Opal was a stay-at-home wife & mother while her children were growing up and to 'rode heard on her kids'!
Opal always raised a big garden and put up fruits & vegetables for her family. She was famous for pies and cinnamon rolls. You never went away hungry from the house. As soon as you walked in, she had the coffee pot on and one of her pies that was always available cut up and set in front of you. The number of pies and cinnamon rolls cannot be counted. Opal experienced great losses in her life. Opal & Vernon lost their daughter, Joyce Darlene, at the age of six months to whooping cough. Vernon died in 1975 and six weeks later, her two youngest sons, Gale & Lyle, died in a car-train accident.
After Vemon died in 1975, she Went to work at the Taylor County Care Facility as a cook for five years. It was at this time that Opal began writing in her diaries which was unknown to her children until recently. She continued this daily for the next 30 years. Her children believed Opal just stayed at home waiting for company & the kids to come home. After the discovery of the diaries, they thought differently; she never stayed at home! Opal received her driver's license at the age of 59 and was off and running. Opal detailed in her diary her shopping trips all over southwest Iowa. After a couple of fender-benders, she reluctantly gave up her license at the age of 85; a relief to her kids! Opal remained active until she broke her hip in 2007. She then entered the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center where she remained until her death on May 30, 2010.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ernest & Nellie Huber; husband Vernon; daughter Joyce; sons Gayle & Lyle; great grandson Justin Love; brother Darrell Huber; and sister Wauneta Craecraft.
Left to mourn her passing are her children Gary Day & wife Gayle of Hildreth, NE, Dean Day & wife Julia of Blue Grass, IA, Carol Smith & husband Ernie of Gravity, IA, Doyle Day of Red Oak, IA; nine grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren; sister Helen Volbrecht of Omaha, NE; brothers Duane Huber of Lenox, IA, Dale Huber of Creston, IA and Cecil Huber of Savannah, MO; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was a kind and loving woman who never had an unkind word to say about anyone. A memorial fund has been established to the Ronald McDonald House in Omaha, NE. Arrangements by Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Clearfield, Iowa.
Services were held Thursday, June 3,2010 at 12 noon at the Christian Church in Clearfield, Iowa with Rev. Bob Thompson officiating. Interment was in Clearfield Cemetery, Clearfield, Iowa.
