[page 998] White Cloud Township - James R. Silvers, farmer, section 20, was born in Lee County, Virginia, on the 3d day of July, 1831, and was a son of Jacob and Charlotte (Southern) Silvers, both natives of Virginia. The former was a farmer by occupation, and James passed his early youth in attending school and working on the farm. During the war he became a member of the Eleventh Iowa Infantry Volunteer Regiment, and served for one year, when he received an honorable discharge. In 1866 he came to Missouri, and in 1876 located in Nodaway County, where he now owns 180 acres of land. Mr S. is a practical agriculturist, is the owner of a good farm, and upon it he keeps excellent improvements. This township has few better citizens. His marriage was to Eliza C. Shepler, of Logan County, Illinois, daughter of Henry B. Shepler. Their family consists of: Oscar J., Elgin C., D.M., Lancaster S., Ida May, James Willie, Ora C., Lottie Ellen and Ota A. One child, Sarah J., died when three years old. Oscar J. Silver is now taking a regular course of study at home, under the direction of the Chautauqua Literary Scientific Circle, a new institution which is gaining many friends in the educational world. Jacob Silvers, the father of James, moved on the farm which the latter now occupies, in 1867. He died in 1871, after having made many improvements upon it. Mr S. is a Republican, and a member of the United Brethren Church.
