Mrs. Rose Gilbert of Hopkins, announces the marriage of her granddaughter Miss Ruth Arlene Morehouse, to Donald King, son of Mr. and Mrs. Judd King, of Pickering, the wedding took place in Maryville, Tuesday April 23, 1940.
Mr. and Mrs. King will reside in Pickering.

Announces Marriage

Mrs. Dixie Owens of Hopkins announces the marriage of her daughter Margaret Louise of San Francisco, California to Carl Melvin of San Francisco, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Melvin of Hopkins. The wedding took place March 19, at the Presbyterian church in Reno, Nevada, with the pastor, Rev. Charles Case, formerly of Maryville, performing the single ring ceremony, which was preceded by organ music.

The bride wore a light blue suit with navy and red accessories.

Mrs. Melvin who was graduated from the Hopkins high school, has been employed at the American Trust Bank in San Francisco since going to California six months ago.

Mr. Melvin, who was also graduated from Hopkins high school, is now employed at the Todd California shipyards in Richmond.

James Gray, R. L. Faddis Promoted to Technicians

Pfc. James W. Gray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Gray of Pickering, has been promoted to Technician 5th Grade of the 3rd Armored division, it has been announced by Col. W. H. Jones,jr., commanding the 32nd Armored regiment.

Promoted to Technician 4th Grade in the same division is Robert L. Faddis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Faddis of Conception Junction.

Both young men are stationed at Camp Polk, La. The 3rd Armored division is one of Uncle Sam's pazer units.

Mrs. Lillie Morehouse who has been in poor health the past two years, has deceded to live with her three sons and families. Ula, Fay, and Andy, and has sold her home in east Hopkins to Milton Engle of near Skidmore. Mrs. Morehouse had a public sale Tuesday of her household goods and she is now at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fay Morehouse east of Hopkins.

Double Wedding

The double ring ceremonies of two sisters was solemnized at 10:30 o'clock Saturday morning, Febuary 22, at the Methodist Church. The brides are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Ula Morehouse of Hopkins.
Miss Betty Morehouse, became the bride of John T. Engle and Miss Beverly Morehouse became the bride of Donald W. Bollinger. Mr. Engle is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Engle of Hopkins and Mr. Bollinger is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bollinger of Hopkins.
The Rev. R. B. Holliday, pastor of the Methodist Church, performed the double service.
Mrs. Engle, wore a grey and white pin striped suit, with black accessories. She wore a corsage of red roses. Mrs. Bollinger was attired in a aqua two piece dress with black accessories, her corsage was made of red rosebuds.
The brides are graduates of Hopkins High School. Mrs. Engle has been employed in Maryville at the Division Employment Security. Mrs. Bollinger is teaching at Knabb school and will finish this term.
Mr. Bollinger graduated from Hopkins High School in 1940. He served in the Navy for one year. He and his bride will live on a farm, he recently purchased east of Hopkins.
Mr. Engle graduated from Sheridan High School in 1940, and was discharged after serving two years in the Navy. Mr. and Mrs. Engle will reside on a farm south of Hopkins.
The parents and immediate families of both couples attended the wedding. After the ceremony, they left for a wedding trip, Mr. and Mrs. Engle went to the Ozarks and Mr. and Mrs. Bollinger went to Kansas City.

Open House

Mr. and Mrs. Leman Morehouse celebrated their golden wedding anniversary yesterday at their home, five miles west of Hopkins, with open house from 2 to 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The serving table was covered with a lace cloth and centered with a crystal cake stand, a wedding gift to the Morehouse's which held the three tier wedding cake. Yellow tapers were also used on the table.

Mr. Morehouse was born March 4, 1870 the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Morehouse on the "old home place," where Mr. and Mrs. Morehouse now reside. Mrs. Morehouse was born October 21, 1874, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Hodges and she came to Missouri from Indiana when she was 7 years old.

They have three sons, Ula, Fay and Andy Morehouse, all of Hopkins and their families were present and the members of the Worth-while club of which Mrs. Morehouse is a charter member, attended in a body. Mrs. Morehouse's sister Mrs. Tine Miller and Mr. Miller, who were present at the wedding ceremony, were present at the anniversary celebration, as were Abe and Edgar Miller, who were small children at the wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Morehouse have fifteen grandchildren.

Morehouse Wins Prize

Local Dealer Gets Recognition From Continental Oil Company

Marlin Morehouse has been announced as a winner of a contest among 20,000 Continental Oil company dealers. He will receive a fifteenth place prize in the Greenback club sweepstakes, according to J. S. Curtis, division manager, Kansas City.

Morehouse has operated the Conoco Station at 921 South Main street, since February 9. Prior to that he was in the army, serving as a staff sergeant. Morehouse received a prize for preparation of touraides for customers of the company.

Bridal Shower

Miss Doris Newberry of Maryville was honored with a miscellaneous bridal shower Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. J. W. Herdon. The Hostesses were the Misses Mary Cunningham, Jessie Donnell, Mildred Waske and Lois Tuck. The theme , "Hitch a Wagon to a Star", was carried out with pink, yellow and white decorations.

Games furnished the entertainment and prizes were won by Miss Edna Flannery and Mrs. Clyde Pistole.

The Amos L. Rileys Observe Their 60th Wedding Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Amos L. Riley celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary Sunday at their home at Parnell. They were married March 18, 1885, at Maryville, by Capt. Charles Hyslop. Following their marriage they moved to a farm northwest of Parnell, where they lived ten years. They then moved to the Riley farm, northwest of Parnell, where they resided thirty years before moving to Parnell in 1926.

Mr. Riley was born August 5, 1860, southwest of Hopkins, the son of the late Luther C. Riley and Caroline Morehouse Riley, who came to Missouri in 1857 from Ohio and settled in what is known as the Morehous settlement.

Mrs. Riley was the former Mary Alice Cox daughter of the late E. Cole and Lyda Cox. The family homesteaded west of Hopkins, where Mrs. Riley was born October 18, 1863.

Mr. and Mrs. Riley are in fair health. They are the parents of six children, including Robert H. Riley, and Mrs. Roy Wilson, Sheridan, Elmer G. Riley, Shenandah, Iowa and Charles L. Riley and Mrs. Lestern Roush, Maryville. They have thirty grandchildren, five of whom are in service.

Bequeaths $5,000 To College for Morehouse Display

A $5,000 bequest was made to the Board of Regents of Northwest Missouri State College for a Memorial fund for Albert P. Morehouse, through the will of the late Mrs. Nannie M. Neale, who was well-known in Maryville, was the daughter of ex-governor Morehouse.

The income from the fund is to be used in the care and preservation mementos of Gov. Morehouse, which are in a museum in the library of the College.

Amoung the mementos in the museum are several articles of clothing worn by Mrs. Morehouse for her wedding to the governor in 1855. A blue beaded "wrapper" and an evening cape with a design stamped on with a $5 gold piece are both part of the trousseau worn by Mrs. Morehouse. Other articles of clothing include hand embroidered aprons, waists, skirts, mitts, linen night caps and a chemise.

Also in the collection is an old fan used by Mrs. Neale at a reception in St. Louis when Cleveland took over the presidency. A gold topped cane, presented to Gov. Morehouse by the sentators, is among the relics. The can was later presented by Mrs. Neale to Nat Sisson, who in turn presented it to the college.

When all the bequests and expenses have been paid, the remainder of the estate is to accrue to the Memorial fund for Morehouse, and the funds invested by the Board of Regents. Charles Bell, Maryville attorney, represented the Board at the hearing in the probate court in Oswego, Kansas.

Other bequests were to Leroy Neale, nephew of Mr. Neale, $5000, Chetopa free library, $1,000 for the Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Neale endowment fund to purchase books, St. Paul Episcopal church of Chetopa, $2,00 for the Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Neale endowment fund to be used in the maintenance and upkeep of the church, Chetopa Oak Hill cemetery, endowment fun of $750 to be used in the care of the lot and stone on the A.D. Neale lot, J. B. Lothan, $250, Edna Nothan, $2,000, Nancy Neale Wester, Marshalltown, Iowa $2,000.

Mrs. Neale bequested her home and its furnishings to the late Mrs. Mary Ream, Maryville, but due to the prior death of Mrs. Ream, a codial was added to the original will and the furnishings left to relatives. The property is to be sold and added to the estate.

Little Damage Listed in Mishap Near Hopkins

A two-car Highway 27 accident last night north of Hopkins resulted in moderate damage to the cars involved, a highway patrol trooper reported this morning neither of the drivers involved was injuried.

The accident occurred a mile north of Hopkins at 7:10 p. m. The reooper said Donald Clymens, 19, Hopkins, and Richard Morehouse 16, Hopkins, were the drivers of the two cars involved.

Morehouse was pulling out of the city park on the west side of the highway when his car struck the northbound car driven by Clymens, the patrol reported. Damage was moderate to the right side of the Morehouse vehicle and to the left side of the Clymens car.

Burned by "Bomb"

Richard Morehouse, 7 year-old- son of Mr. and Mrs. Faye Morehouse, received an injury to his left eye ad his nose while celebrating the Fourth. He was on the porch at his home when he lighted a "bomb" and did not make his get away quite quick enough. His mother heard him scream and rushed to him but the corner of his nose and face were burned. The injured eye is still kept bandaged and has an inflamed appearance, yet he is not suffering as he did and the sight will not be impaired--Hopkins Journal.

Miss Dixie Morehouse, a student at the State College here was rushed to the St. Francis hospital at 12 o'clock noon yesterday where she underwent an emergency appendectomy. Her condition is considered to be satisfactory.

Newberry--Morehouse

Miss Doris Newberry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Newberry of Ravenwood, became the bride of James C. Morehouse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Morehouse of Hopkins, in a double ring ceremony at 7 o'clock the evening of November 28, at Atchison, Kansas.

The bride wore a powder blue dress with black accessories and a corsage of red roses. The couple was accompanied by Misses Lois Tuck, Mary Cunningham, Jessie Donnell and Ambrose Wilmes.

The bride graduated from the Ravenwood High school and has been employed at the Firestone Store in Maryville.

The bridegroom graduated from the Hopkins high school and served in the army. He is now employed with the R. E. A. Electric Compnay in Independence, Wisconsin. After a short wedding trip the couple will b at home in Independence.

Canty--Blackney

Miss Isabel June Canty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Canty of Hiawatha, Kansas, formerly of Hopkins, became the bride of Edward Blackney May 16, at the Hopkins Baptist Church. Mr. Blackney is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Burt Blackney of Hopkins.

The bride graduated this spring from Hopkins High School. She was attired in an aqua crepe dress fashioned with a ballerina skirt. Her hat was made of white eyelet embroidery. She wore a corsage made of gardenias.

They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bollinger. Mrs. Bollinger wore a brown gabardine suit with matching accessories. Her corsage was made of gardenias.

The bridegroom is employed at the Mutti Motor Company. The couple will live west Hopkins in the property they recently purchased from Mrs. Emory Johnson.

Everett Gray Candidate For the County Court

Everett Gray of Clearmont, today filled his declaration as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the judge of the county court from the north district.

Mr. Gray has lived in Atchison township all of his life. After living on a farm he moved to Clearmont about ten years ago and entered the oil business. At the present time he has a lease on the D-X station on Highway No. 71 at Clearmont.

Mr. Gray is serving his second term as trustee of Atchison township and has been a good roads booster. Mr. Gray is married and has two daughters, one a teacher and the other is attending the Teachers College here.

Golden Wedding

Mr. and Mrs. Lafe Blanchard of College Springs, Iowa, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday with a family dinner at their home. The table was centered with a two tiered wedding cake and gold candles in crystal holders. The cake was baked and decorated in gold and white by their daughter, Mrs. Elmer Masher, Coin, Iowa.

They were married March 14, 1898, at Pickering by the Rev. J. N. Moats, pastor, at the parsonage.

Mrs. Blanchard is the former Miss Ida Gray, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gray.

Mr. and Mrs. Blanchard moved to Iowa in 1926 after home in Nodaway county. In 1938 they moved to College Springs where they returned.

They are the parents of six children, Roy Blanchard, Clearmont, Harley Blanchard, Richard, Washington, Mrs. Burt Shelton Blackney, Hopkins, Mrs. Albert Glines, New Market, Iowa, Mrs. Masher, Coin, Iowa, and Mrs. Wilbur Bush, Maryville, 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Edward Blackney, Hopkins, completely demolished his 1935 Ford coach when it left the road on Highway 46, three and one-half miles west of Highway 71 at 1 o'clock this morning. " I just went to sleep," the 19 year old youth said in explaining the cause of the accident. He was accompanied by Wayne Canty, also of Hopkins, who suffered a cut on his forehead that required four stitches.

Blackney's only injury was a slight cut inside his lip. Damage was estimated at $600.

Hood-Dougherty

Miss Lorene Hood became the bride of Robert G. Dougherty of New Market, Iowa, last Saturday with Rev. W. H. Hansferd pastor of the Hopkins Methodist Church performing the single ring ceremony at the church parsonage.

Mrs. Dougherty enlisted in the WAVES and is stationed at Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Dougherty who was serving with the Merchant Marines until recently, is farming with his father at New Market.

Attending the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. O.T. Dougherty, parent of the bridegroom and his two sons.

Woldruff--Robinson

In a double ring ceremony, at 3:30 p. m. Wednesday at the Wray Memorial Methodist Church, Hopkins, Miss Norma Lee Woldruff daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Woldruff, Hopkins, became the bride of Chester Robinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Robinson also of Hopkins.

The ceremony was read by the Rev. Arthur Gray with only the immediate families of the bridal couple present.

Mrs. Gerald Godsey played "Because" and the wedding marches.

The bride wore a navy blue faille dress trimmed with self-covered buttons and a brocaded satin collar trimmed with seed pearls. Her corsage was a pink and white roses. Her attendant, Mrs. Ed. Blackney, wore a brown gabardine dress with light brown hat and corsage of yellow and white mums. Mr. Blackney served as best man for the groom.

After the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents. The serving table was centered with a two-tiered wedding cake and lighted tapered candels. Mrs. Robert Gill Lawson, sister of the bride served the cake, Mrs. Gerald Godsey poured and the Misses Ellen Hall and Barbara Orme assisted with the serving. Miss Mildred Davis was in charge of the guest book.

Mr. and Mrs. Robinson left on a brief wedding trip and the bridegroom, on delay en route from Travis A. F. B. Fairfield, California, will report at Cheyenne, Wyoming November 29 to attend an air force training school.

Both the bride and groom were graduated from the Hopkins High School, and Mrs. Robinson is employed at the J. C. Penny store in Clarinda, Iowa.

The deer was killed by Mr. Blackney on a hunting trip in south Missouri recently. Mrs. Ringold and Mrs. Blackney are sisters, and daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Otho McDowell.

Announces Marriage

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Broyles of Wilcox, announce the marriage of their daughter Mrs. Bessie King to Jesse Lindsey, of St. Joseph, which took place Monday at St. Joseph. Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey will be making there home in St. Joseph, where Mr. Lindsey is a landscape gardener.
