[105] Caldwell, Sarah, 82, Portland, ME, died on March 23, 2006 in the Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME. Miss Caldwell was born in Maryville to Carrie Margaret Caldwell, who was a Northwest music instructor. Her parents divorced while she was an infant. Her mother remarried Henry Alexander who also taught at Northwest. They moved to Arkansas. At four-years-old, she was both a mathematical and musical prodigy. She graduated from Fayetteville High School, Fayetteville, AR at the age of 14. She founded the Opera Company of Boston in 1957 and served as its artistic director and frequently as its conductor until its demise. In 1976, she became the first woman to conduct at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. She attended the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied opera production, stage design and conducting and also violin and viola. Caldwell taught at the Berkshire Music Center from 1948 to 1952. From 1952 to 1960, she headed the Opera Workshop Department at Boston University. [107] Campbell, Sarah "Adeline" Morehouse - Funeral services for Adeline Campbell, age 92 of Bedford, who died Thursday, October 25, 2007 at the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center were held Monday, October 29, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial was held in the Hopkins Cemetery in Hopkins, Missouri. Memorials can be given in Adeline’s name. Sarah Adeline (Morehouse) Campbell was born January 2, 1915 on a farm west of Hopkins, Missouri the daughter of Timothy Grant Morehouse and Laura (Taylor) Morehouse. She had four older brothers, Robert, Dewey, Floyd and Charlie. When Adeline was three years old, her Dad was thrown from a horse and killed. Laura raised the boys and Adeline on the farm by herself. On May 11, 1933, Adeline was united in marriage to Hugh B. Campbell in Hopkins. Three children were born to bless their marriage, George, Helen and Albert. Later Hugh and Adeline divorced and she moved back to the home farm with her mother and raised her children. She also took jobs caring for others and as a maid at the Garland Hotel. Adeline received her nursing license and started working in Lenox, later purchasing a home in Sharpsburg. She also worked in Corning at the nursing home, while continuing to care for other people in their homes, one of which was Lester McKay, whom she later married. This marriage only lasted a couple of years, and then she sold her home and moved to Bedford where she lived for the rest of her life. At the age of 70, Adeline retired and took care of her brother Charlie until he died. In 2005, she moved to the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center where she lived at the time of her death. Adeline was a wonderful homemaker and life-long area resident. She enjoyed tending a large garden and canning all of the produce to share with her neighbors and friends. She always had a ‘green thumb’ raising many plants and flowers, even keeping the basement full of bulbs during the winter months. She enjoyed caring for her brother Charlie when he lived on the farm west of Bedford. Being adventurous, she and Charlie were known to ‘take off in the car’, traveling to places unknown, leaving their family wondering where they had taken off to! In the 1960’s, Adeline went to Palm Springs, California to see her daughter Helen. Since she was visiting Helen for several months, she worked at the Desert Nursing Home. While visiting California, her biggest thrill was going to Hollywood to the Walk of Fame and seeing the handprints in the sidewalk. However, Adeline felt she couldn’t stay in California to live as there was no snow, rain, or mud . . . only sand! Helen tried several times to get her mother to move out to California, and since she would never consider doing that, Helen finally moved to Bedford. Adeline had been a member of the former Good Hope Church and later transferred her membership to the Christian Church in Hopkins. Left to cherish Adeline’s memory are her three children, George Campbell and wife Thelma of Maryville, Missouri; Helen Smith Bradley and husband Ron of Bedford; and Albert Campbell and wife Dorothy of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren, Ed, Sheri, Faron, Shirley, Bruce and Lee; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; along with many other family relatives and friends. Preceding Adeline in death were her parents Timothy and Laura Morehouse; her first husband, Hugh Campbell; and all four brothers, Floyd, Dewey, Charlie and Robert. Adeline was dearly loved and will be missed by all of her family and friends.

[118] Clark, Abbey J. Again it becomes our sad duty to chronicle the decease of another respected citizen of this community. Abbey J. Austin was born in the state of New York, March 30, 1828. She died in Worth county, Mo., January 4, 1903. When a child three years of age she removed with her parents to Illinois where she lived until January 4, 1847 when she was united in marriage with Elon D. Clark. They then removed to Iowa. In the year 1857 Mr. and Mrs. Clark moved to Davis (Daviess) county, this state, and since that time they have resided in Davis (Daviess), Harrison, Nodaway and Worth counties and in the latter county have resided during the last seventeen years. In the year 1860 she united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church of which she remained a faithful member until her death. Kind and helpful as a mother and neighbor she was beloved by all who knew her. By a strange coincidence the date of her death was her 56th wedding anniversary. Rev. M. H. Eells, pastor of the Sheridan M.E. church preached the funeral sermon in the Mission Ridge school house Monday from the text, Rev 14:13. The remains were interred in the Sheridan Cemetery. Mrs. Clark was the mother of ten children, seven of whom still survive her: William T. Clark, Harrison County, Mo., Alexander Clark, Ringgold county, Iowa, Mary E. Siddens, Gentry county, Mo., Sarah B. Clark, who still remains with her father; John P. Clark, Harrison county, Mo.; Alice J. Little, Jasper county Mo. He had been in poor health for a long time. Mr. Copple was 70 years of age and almost his entire life was spent in Missouri. He was a retired farmer, moving to Hopkins ten years ago. Services were held at the Hopkins Baptist church Thursday afternoon, the pastor Norman J. Lewis officiating. He is survived by his wife, Bessie, two sons, James and Clarence Copple, of Torrington, Wyo., one daughter, Mrs. Harry Weir (Nancy), Tabor, Iowa; a step-daughter, Mrs. Ray Robison (Ila Morris) of Goleta, Calif.; one brother, John Copple, Hopkins; ten grandchildren and one great granddaughter. [128] Coston, Gene - A tragedy at Maitland, Mo, occurred Thursday, when Gene Coston was found to have shot himself with a 22 cal. rifle. He was a farmer living at home, and had gone to the basement to fix the furnace fire. His wife noticed his absence, and going downstairs found him with a bullet in his head, having suicided. [130] Crabtree, Monte Earle, age 67, of Maryville, Missouri, passed away Tuesday morning, March 29, 2005, at Beverly Health Care Center, Maryville, Missouri. He was born December 23, 1937, near Burlington Junction, Missouri, to Donald Q. and Vera (Walker) Crabtree. He graduated from Burlington Junction High School in 1955. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Burlington Junction. Monte started working as a printer for the Burlington Junction Post Newspaper and then went to work in Maryville as a printer. He worked in Washington, D.C. as a printer with the United States Government Printing Office until 1975 when he returned to Maryville and worked as a printer for sixteen years for Northwest Missouri State University retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Maryville Elks Lodge for about twenty years. Monte is survived by a son, Stephen Crabtree of San Diego, California; a daughter, Tina Westcott of Skidmore, Missouri; his mother, Vera Crabtree of Rock Port, Missouri; three brothers: Paul Crabtree of Grand Junction, Colorado, Elwin Crabtree of Grand Lake, Colorado and Marvin Crabtree of Great Falls, Montana; three sisters: Lois Baker of Shenandoah, Iowa, Amy Moore of Rock Port, Missouri and Carol Crabtree of Independence, Missouri; eleven grandchildren; three great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald; a son, Mark Crabtree and a granddaughter. [134] Cummins, Doris L., 92, Maryville, died Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, after a very brief illness. She was born in Skidmore, in 1914 and would have been 93 on May 24. Doris was the wife of JB Cummins, who survives. Doris and JB were married on June 8, 1940 and would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year. A son, Chris and his wife, Marianne Cummins reside in Maryville. Their sons, Christopher and Michael brought much joy to Doris as her first grandchildren. A daughter, Ann Cummins resides in Topeka, KS and was a weekly visitor to Parkdale Manor where both Doris and JB resided. She is also survived by two nieces and numerous cousins. Doris graduated from Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1936 with a double major in business and physical education. Doris taught tap dance while attending college and was the queen of the 1936 graduating class. Besides working for financial businesses, Doris taught business in Wiota, IA, before World War II started and at Maryville High School after the war. She was the bookkeeper for Cummins Furniture for 40 years. Doris had a couple of “firsts” while living in Nodaway County. She was a member of the first Girl Scout Troop which formed on May 1, 1928. She was also the first woman to be selected to serve on the grand jury in the county. It was convened in 1981. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Alferd and Nellie Weddle Logan and her sisters, Norma Green and Louise Cockayne. Besides devotion to her husband, children and grandchildren, Doris also devoted very much time to volunteer services. She worked numerous elections, served with the St. Francis Auxiliary Board, was a den mother for cub scouts and devoted hours to serving her church, St. Gregory Barbarigo Parish. She was president of Deanery 8, which consisted of parishes in several Northwest Missouri counties. She became president of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women in 1966. This council represented 27 counties and hosted a national convention in Kansas City. Doris had an integral part in the planning of it. In May of 1988, the National Council of Catholic Men, through the Most Reverend Charles Helmsing, presented Doris the Sir Thomas Moore award for exceptional service to the Lay Apostolate. Doris had a great sense of humor which she kept until her death. She was also an avid bridge player and a master of sewing clothes from her own patterns. She was a loving wife to JB, a great mom to Chris and Ann and a devoted grandmother to Christopher and Michael. She lived a long a full life, but her presence is greatly missed. Visitation is 6-7 pm, Friday, May 11, at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville, with a prayer service at 7 pm. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 am, Saturday, May 12, at St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church. Burial is in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Maryville. [135] Hopkins Journal March 18, 1971 Last Rites Held Saturday for Mrs. Allie Coleman, 89 Mrs. Allie Coleman, a native of Hopkins, died at 1:30 a.m. Thursday March 11, at the St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, where she had been a patient, two months. Mrs. Coleman had made her home with her nephew, Harold Baldwin and family for one year prior to her hospitalization. Death came only two day before her 90th birthday. She was born March 13, 1881, at Hopkins, the daughter of Henry L. Baldwin and Axie Isadora Morehouse Baldwin. On December 24, 1900, in Hopkins, she was married to George Oliver "Oll" Coleman, who preceded her in death December 20, 1943. She was a charter member of the White Cloud Social Neighbors Club. Her only survivors are one cousin, Mrs. Asa (Bertha) Ringold, Maryville, and nieces and nephews, Mrs, Eldon Clayton, Mrs. Ella Fine, Mrs. Erville Allison, and Mrs. Lula Blackney, and Harold Baldwin, all of Hopkins, C. F. Baldwin and Mrs. Vernon Coleville, of Maryville, Mrs. C. C. Rice, Pickering, and Mrs. Calvin Inmans, Los Angeles, California. [143] Coston, Martha J. Hays - Last Thursday this community was called upon to mourn the departure from this world of Mrs H.H. Coston, who for many years has been a resident of this town and county. She died at her home in South Wray [Colorado], Thursday afternoon at three o'clock. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon and were conducted by Rev A.W. Rice. Interment was made in the Grand View Cemetery. Mrs Coston was the maternal head of a much esteemed and prominent family of this county, and while her circle of acquaintances was not so large, because of her being a homeloving woman rather than one interested in social affairs, she leaves a host of friends who knew her worth and who join with the bereaved family in mourning her death. All feel that a good woman has gone to her rest and reward. Martha J. Hays Coston, was born at Blandinville, McDonough county, Illinois, December 20th, 1840, and died at Wray, Colorado, April 22, 1915, at 3:30 p.m. Her sister Isabel U. Hays, died at her home in Skidmore, Missouri, at 7 o'clock that morning, making a double loss for the bereaved family. The subject of this sketch joined the Methodist Episcopal Church while living at Blandinville and when but a young girl, being virtually raised in the church where all her relatives belonged. In 1859, Thomas R. Hays, the father, moved his family to Burr Oak Grove, Missouri, near the present site of Skidmore in Nodaway county. Her father and relatives assisted in building a commodious M.E. church at Burr Oak, where now worships a large congregation. The deceased became a member of this church. Here at Burr Oak Grove she married Harrison H. Coston on March 15, 1866. In 1883 Mr and Mrs Coston moved their family to Nemaha county, Kansas, where they resided until the spring of 1893, when they came to Yuma County and took up their residence on their ranch on the Black Wolff. With the exception of two years, when they returned to their Kansas home and resided, they lived on their Black Wolf ranch until 1901, when they moved to Wray. Here their home has been since that time. There were born to this union four children. Three have grown to manhood and womanhood. One son, Rollin A., died in 1876 at the age of eight years. A daughter, Edith G. Baker, resides in Wyoming; another daughter, Mabel E. Bateman, and a son, Richard H., reside in Washington. This exemplary mother's life might well be followed by all Christian women. Though she never became affiliated with any church in the west, she will be remembered by her many friends here as a woman of high Christian character and charitable disposition. Long after more prominent men or women in the community are forgotten, this faithful mother's memory will be fresh in the minds of all who came in contact with her beautiful character. She leaves to mourn their loss, besides the bereaved husband and four children, four brothers, viz: William R. Hays, Denver; James T. Hays, Maryville, Missouri; John G. Hays, Skidmore, Missouri, and Joseph W. Hays, St Joseph. Besides these are the two sons-in-law, E.P. Baker, of Horse Creek, Wyoming, and Frank E. Bateman, of Lynden, Washington. Miss Caldwell was born in Maryville to Carrie Margaret Caldwell, who was a Northwest music instructor. Her parents divorced while she was an infant.

Her mother remarried Henry Alexander who also taught at Northwest. They moved to Arkansas.

At four-years-old, she was both a mathematical and musical prodigy. She graduated from Fayetteville High School, Fayetteville, AR at the age of 14.

She founded the Opera Company of Boston in 1957 and served as its artistic director and frequently as its conductor until its demise. In 1976, she became the first woman to conduct at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.

She attended the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied opera production, stage design and conducting and also violin and viola. Caldwell taught at the Berkshire Music Center from 1948 to 1952. From 1952 to 1960, she headed the Opera Workshop Department at Boston University. Sarah Adeline (Morehouse) Campbell was born January 2, 1915 on a farm west of Hopkins, Missouri the daughter of Timothy Grant Morehouse and Laura (Taylor) Morehouse. She had four older brothers, Robert, Dewey, Floyd and Charlie. When Adeline was three years old, her Dad was thrown from a horse and killed. Laura raised the boys and Adeline on the farm by herself. On May 11, 1933, Adeline was united in marriage to Hugh B. Campbell in Hopkins. Three children were born to bless their marriage, George, Helen and Albert. Later Hugh and Adeline divorced and she moved back to the home farm with her mother and raised her children. She also took jobs caring for others and as a maid at the Garland Hotel. Adeline received her nursing license and started working in Lenox, later purchasing a home in Sharpsburg. She also worked in Corning at the nursing home, while continuing to care for other people in their homes, one of which was Lester McKay, whom she later married. This marriage only lasted a couple of years, and then she sold her home and moved to Bedford where she lived for the rest of her life. At the age of 70, Adeline retired and took care of her brother Charlie until he died. In 2005, she moved to the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center where she lived at the time of her death.

Adeline was a wonderful homemaker and life-long area resident. She enjoyed tending a large garden and canning all of the produce to share with her neighbors and friends. She always had a ‘green thumb’ raising many plants and flowers, even keeping the basement full of bulbs during the winter months. She enjoyed caring for her brother Charlie when he lived on the farm west of Bedford. Being adventurous, she and Charlie were known to ‘take off in the car’, traveling to places unknown, leaving their family wondering where they had taken off to! In the 1960’s, Adeline went to Palm Springs, California to see her daughter Helen. Since she was visiting Helen for several months, she worked at the Desert Nursing Home. While visiting California, her biggest thrill was going to Hollywood to the Walk of Fame and seeing the handprints in the sidewalk. However, Adeline felt she couldn’t stay in California to live as there was no snow, rain, or mud . . . only sand! Helen tried several times to get her mother to move out to California, and since she would never consider doing that, Helen finally moved to Bedford. Adeline had been a member of the former Good Hope Church and later transferred her membership to the Christian Church in Hopkins.

Left to cherish Adeline’s memory are her three children, George Campbell and wife Thelma of Maryville, Missouri; Helen Smith Bradley and husband Ron of Bedford; and Albert Campbell and wife Dorothy of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren, Ed, Sheri, Faron, Shirley, Bruce and Lee; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; along with many other family relatives and friends.

Preceding Adeline in death were her parents Timothy and Laura Morehouse; her first husband, Hugh Campbell; and all four brothers, Floyd, Dewey, Charlie and Robert.

Adeline was dearly loved and will be missed by all of her family and friends.

Again it becomes our sad duty to chronicle the decease of another respected citizen of this community. Abbey J. Austin was born in the state of New York, March 30, 1828. She died in Worth county, Mo., January 4, 1903. When a child three years of age she removed with her parents to Illinois where she lived until January 4, 1847 when she was united in marriage with Elon D. Clark. They then removed to Iowa. In the year 1857 Mr. and Mrs. Clark moved to Davis (Daviess) county, this state, and since that time they have resided in Davis (Daviess), Harrison, Nodaway and Worth counties and in the latter county have resided during the last seventeen years.
In the year 1860 she united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church of which she remained a faithful member until her death. Kind and helpful as a mother and neighbor she was beloved by all who knew her. By a strange coincidence the date of her death was her 56th wedding anniversary. Rev. M. H. Eells, pastor of the Sheridan M.E. church preached the funeral sermon in the Mission Ridge school house Monday from the text, Rev 14:13. The remains were interred in the Sheridan Cemetery.
Mrs. Clark was the mother of ten children, seven of whom still survive her: William T. Clark, Harrison County, Mo., Alexander Clark, Ringgold county, Iowa, Mary E. Siddens, Gentry county, Mo., Sarah B. Clark, who still remains with her father; John P. Clark, Harrison county, Mo.; Alice J. Little, Jasper county Mo.

Joseph Calvin Copple died Tuesday, Dec. 29 at his home in Hopkins, following a two-weeks illness. He had been in poor health for a long time.

Mr. Copple was 70 years of age and almost his entire life was spent in Missouri. He was a retired farmer, moving to Hopkins ten years ago.

Services were held at the Hopkins Baptist church Thursday afternoon, the pastor Norman J. Lewis officiating. He is survived by his wife, Bessie, two sons, James and Clarence Copple, of Torrington, Wyo., one daughter, Mrs. Harry Weir (Nancy), Tabor, Iowa; a step-daughter, Mrs. Ray Robison (Ila Morris) of Goleta, Calif.; one brother, John Copple, Hopkins; ten grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Burial was in the Luteson cemetery near Sheridan.

[128] Coston, Gene - A tragedy at Maitland, Mo, occurred Thursday, when Gene Coston was found to have shot himself with a 22 cal. rifle. He was a farmer living at home, and had gone to the basement to fix the furnace fire. His wife noticed his absence, and going downstairs found him with a bullet in his head, having suicided. [130] Crabtree, Monte Earle, age 67, of Maryville, Missouri, passed away Tuesday morning, March 29, 2005, at Beverly Health Care Center, Maryville, Missouri.
He was born December 23, 1937, near Burlington Junction, Missouri, to Donald Q. and Vera (Walker) Crabtree. He graduated from Burlington Junction High School in 1955. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Burlington Junction.
Monte started working as a printer for the Burlington Junction Post Newspaper and then went to work in Maryville as a printer. He worked in Washington, D.C. as a printer with the United States Government Printing Office until 1975 when he returned to Maryville and worked as a printer for sixteen years for Northwest Missouri State University retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Maryville Elks Lodge for about twenty years.
Monte is survived by a son, Stephen Crabtree of San Diego, California; a daughter, Tina Westcott of Skidmore, Missouri; his mother, Vera Crabtree of Rock Port, Missouri; three brothers: Paul Crabtree of Grand Junction, Colorado, Elwin Crabtree of Grand Lake, Colorado and Marvin Crabtree of Great Falls, Montana; three sisters: Lois Baker of Shenandoah, Iowa, Amy Moore of Rock Port, Missouri and Carol Crabtree of Independence, Missouri; eleven grandchildren; three great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald; a son, Mark Crabtree and a granddaughter.
Services will be held Sunday, April 3, 2005, at 2:00 p.m., at the Barr-Merrick Funeral Chapel, Burlington Junction, Missouri. Burial will be at the Ohio Cemetery, Burlington Junction. Visitation will be held 4-5 p.m., Saturday, April 2, 2005 at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

[134] Cummins, Doris L., 92, Maryville, died Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, after a very brief illness.
She was born in Skidmore, in 1914 and would have been 93 on May 24.
Doris was the wife of JB Cummins, who survives. Doris and JB were married on June 8, 1940 and would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year.
A son, Chris and his wife, Marianne Cummins reside in Maryville. Their sons, Christopher and Michael brought much joy to Doris as her first grandchildren. A daughter, Ann Cummins resides in Topeka, KS and was a weekly visitor to Parkdale Manor where both Doris and JB resided. She is also survived by two nieces and numerous cousins.
Doris graduated from Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1936 with a double major in business and physical education. Doris taught tap dance while attending college and was the queen of the 1936 graduating class.
Besides working for financial businesses, Doris taught business in Wiota, IA, before World War II started and at Maryville High School after the war. She was the bookkeeper for Cummins Furniture for 40 years.
Doris had a couple of “firsts” while living in Nodaway County. She was a member of the first Girl Scout Troop which formed on May 1, 1928. She was also the first woman to be selected to serve on the grand jury in the county. It was convened in 1981.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Alferd and Nellie Weddle Logan and her sisters, Norma Green and Louise Cockayne.
Besides devotion to her husband, children and grandchildren, Doris also devoted very much time to volunteer services. She worked numerous elections, served with the St. Francis Auxiliary Board, was a den mother for cub scouts and devoted hours to serving her church, St. Gregory Barbarigo Parish. She was president of Deanery 8, which consisted of parishes in several Northwest Missouri counties. She became president of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women in 1966. This council represented 27 counties and hosted a national convention in Kansas City. Doris had an integral part in the planning of it.
In May of 1988, the National Council of Catholic Men, through the Most Reverend Charles Helmsing, presented Doris the Sir Thomas Moore award for exceptional service to the Lay Apostolate.
Doris had a great sense of humor which she kept until her death. She was also an avid bridge player and a master of sewing clothes from her own patterns.
She was a loving wife to JB, a great mom to Chris and Ann and a devoted grandmother to Christopher and Michael. She lived a long a full life, but her presence is greatly missed.
Visitation is 6-7 pm, Friday, May 11, at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville, with a prayer service at 7 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10 am, Saturday, May 12, at St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church. Burial is in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Maryville.

Last Rites Held Saturday for Mrs. Allie Coleman, 89

Mrs. Allie Coleman, a native of Hopkins, died at 1:30 a.m. Thursday March 11, at the St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, where she had been a patient, two months. Mrs. Coleman had made her home with her nephew, Harold Baldwin and family for one year prior to her hospitalization. Death came only two day before her 90th birthday.

She was born March 13, 1881, at Hopkins, the daughter of Henry L. Baldwin and Axie Isadora Morehouse Baldwin. On December 24, 1900, in Hopkins, she was married to George Oliver "Oll" Coleman, who preceded her in death December 20, 1943.

She was a charter member of the White Cloud Social Neighbors Club.

Her only survivors are one cousin, Mrs. Asa (Bertha) Ringold, Maryville, and nieces and nephews, Mrs, Eldon Clayton, Mrs. Ella Fine, Mrs. Erville Allison, and Mrs. Lula Blackney, and Harold Baldwin, all of Hopkins, C. F. Baldwin and Mrs. Vernon Coleville, of Maryville, Mrs. C. C. Rice, Pickering, and Mrs. Calvin Inmans, Los Angeles, California.

Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Price Funeral Home, Maryville, with the Rev. Fred Paxton, officiating.

Maurice Peve sang "Sometime We'll Understand", and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", accompained by Mrs. Lavonne Rains, organist.

Pallbearers were, Clayton Massie, Glen Woldruff, Robert Coleman, Russel Coffman, R. T. (Dory) Ingels, and Dr. M.A. Smell. Burial in the Hopkins Cemetery.

Carter, Evelyn J. "Grandma" Carter, 85, Barnard, died Friday, Aug 15, at Maryville Health Care.

Born Jan 14, 1912, to James Russell Loyd and Minnie Lenora Gaskill Brewer, she married Homer Oscar Carter, who later preceded her in death, Dec 9, 1930, in Rock Port [Missouri].

Mrs Carter was a retired Northwest Missouri State University and South Nodaway cook.

She was a member of the Barnard Christian Church, Barnard; and O'Howell Strader American Legion No 102 Auxilliary, Barnard.

Mrs Carter was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister, Betty Moffet; two brothers, Loyd and Hilary Brewer; one daughter, Mary Sybert; and one great-grandchild, Benjamin Elkins.

Survivors include one son, Donald Ray Carter, Barnard; one daughter, Genevieve Wales, Agency, Mo; three sisters, Colleen Montgomery of Independence, Mo, Neva Dean Prater of Kansas City, Mo, and Lenora Graves of Kansas City, Mo; 17 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren.

Visitation is 6 to 8 pm, Monday, Aug18, 1997, at Johnson Funeral Home.

Services are scheduled for 2 pm, Tuesday, Aug 19, 1997, at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville, with David Hilsabeck officiating.

Burial will be in Center Grove, Westboro [Missouri].

[143] Coston, Martha J. Hays - Last Thursday this community was called upon to mourn the departure from this world of Mrs H.H. Coston, who for many years has been a resident of this town and county. She died at her home in South Wray [Colorado], Thursday afternoon at three o'clock. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon and were conducted by Rev A.W. Rice. Interment was made in the Grand View Cemetery.

Mrs Coston was the maternal head of a much esteemed and prominent family of this county, and while her circle of acquaintances was not so large, because of her being a homeloving woman rather than one interested in social affairs, she leaves a host of friends who knew her worth and who join with the bereaved family in mourning her death. All feel that a good woman has gone to her rest and reward.

Martha J. Hays Coston, was born at Blandinville, McDonough county, Illinois, December 20th, 1840, and died at Wray, Colorado, April 22, 1915, at 3:30 p.m. Her sister Isabel U. Hays, died at her home in Skidmore, Missouri, at 7 o'clock that morning, making a double loss for the bereaved family.

The subject of this sketch joined the Methodist Episcopal Church while living at Blandinville and when but a young girl, being virtually raised in the church where all her relatives belonged. In 1859, Thomas R. Hays, the father, moved his family to Burr Oak Grove, Missouri, near the present site of Skidmore in Nodaway county. Her father and relatives assisted in building a commodious M.E. church at Burr Oak, where now worships a large congregation. The deceased became a member of this church.

Here at Burr Oak Grove she married Harrison H. Coston on March 15, 1866. In 1883 Mr and Mrs Coston moved their family to Nemaha county, Kansas, where they resided until the spring of 1893, when they came to Yuma County and took up their residence on their ranch on the Black Wolff. With the exception of two years, when they returned to their Kansas home and resided, they lived on their Black Wolf ranch until 1901, when they moved to Wray. Here their home has been since that time.

There were born to this union four children. Three have grown to manhood and womanhood. One son, Rollin A., died in 1876 at the age of eight years. A daughter, Edith G. Baker, resides in Wyoming; another daughter, Mabel E. Bateman, and a son, Richard H., reside in Washington.

This exemplary mother's life might well be followed by all Christian women. Though she never became affiliated with any church in the west, she will be remembered by her many friends here as a woman of high Christian character and charitable disposition. Long after more prominent men or women in the community are forgotten, this faithful mother's memory will be fresh in the minds of all who came in contact with her beautiful character.

She leaves to mourn their loss, besides the bereaved husband and four children, four brothers, viz: William R. Hays, Denver; James T. Hays, Maryville, Missouri; John G. Hays, Skidmore, Missouri, and Joseph W. Hays, St Joseph. Besides these are the two sons-in-law, E.P. Baker, of Horse Creek, Wyoming, and Frank E. Bateman, of Lynden, Washington. In the former's family are two grandchildren, and in the latter, four grandchildren.
