Scott, Mrs C.O. - Mrs Walter Stevenson of Tarkio received word of the death of her sister, Mrs C.O. Scott of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Nodaway county, which occurred August 30 [1940] in a San Diego hospital. Her death followed a long illness.

Mrs Scott is survived by a daughter, Mrs Morton Disney, San Diego; one son, Guy Scott, El Centro, Calif; one grandson, Charles Robert Scott, and the sister, Mrs Stevens. Mr Scott died last December.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Bryan Sherry.

Shewey, James W. Shewey, 97, of Burlington Junction, Missouri, passed away Saturday night, October 14, 2006 at Community Hospital, Fairfax, Missouri.

He was born January 9, 1909, at Norton, Kansas. He lived in Quitman for 27 years before moving to Burlington Junction in 1983. He was a construction worker for the Labor Union and retired in 1971. He was a member of the Local #579 Labor Union and has been for over 50 years.
He was married to Leona Opal Hatcher, June 25, 1938, at Rock Port, Missouri and she preceded him in death in 1994.

He was also preceded by a son, Jerry Shewey in 2002, a grandson, Kenneth Shewey, six brothers, Wardie, Lee, Peter, George and Arthur and an infant brother and two sisters, Nettie, Yonke and Ruth Saathoff. He is survived by three children, Kenneth and Erika Shewey, Skidmore, Missouri, Mary and Bob Porter, Burlington Junction, Missouri and Dorothy and Lowell Dean Vanfosson, Maryville, Missouri; a sister, Margaret Belt, Lebanon, Missouri; seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Barr-Merrick Funeral Chapel, Burlington Junction, Missouri, Tuesday, October 17, 20906 at 11:00 a.m. Burial was in the Quitman Cemetery, Quitman, Missouri. Born on November 16, 1937 in Braggs, Oklahoma he was the son of the late Calvin B. & Beulah (Howard) Simmons.

He was a member of the St. Gregory Catholic Church.

He was the owner and operator of Simmons Village Restaurant & Deli for 26 years and formerly was the Food Service Director at Northwest Missouri State University.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Bernella Rose (Perk) Simmons, whom he married on January 31, 1957 in Sioux City, Iowa, loving daughters, Mary Simmons & Brenda Scott, both of Maryville, a sister, Delphia Reed, South Sioux City, NE, grandsons, Brad Simmons, Jason Laws, granddaughters, Tiffany Laws, Jennifer Tennihill, & Kim Tennihill. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, George A. Simmons, sister, Neta Simmons Oviatt.

Born Nov 12, 1947, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Stanley and Velna Zimnock, she and her family owned and operated the Quad River News, a weekly newspaper in Sheridan. She also worked as a potter.

She married Joe A. Stark, June 20, 1970, in Westwood, N.J.

A resident of Sheridan for 20 years, Mrs Stark was a graduate of New York University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Stoll, Martha Augustine Stoll, 87, St. Joseph, died Monday, January 21, 2008.
A rosary was held Saturday, January 26, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian burial. Father Gregory Haskamp was the celebrant. Interment was in St. Columba Cemetery, Conception.
The family has requested memorials to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church or to Living Community of St. Joseph Foundation.

Stone, Lorena Ellen, 85 years of age of Sheridan, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 1994, at a St Joseph hospital.

Born in Pierre, South Dakota, Mrs Stone had lived in the Sheridan area since the 1930’s.

She was a member of the Sheridan Christian Church and American Legion Auxiliary, Sheridan.

In 1925, she married Victor Stone in Pickering, Mo, he died in 1955.

Surviving are three sons, Denis Stone of Salem, Ar, Paul Stone, Independence, Mo, and Dean Stone, Lone Jack, Mo; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial services were held at 2:00 pm., Monday, November 21, 1994 at the Andrews Funeral Home in Grant City, Mo. The body has been creamted.

Stone, Victor Vernon – SHERIDAN – Victor Vernon Stone died suddenly Monday morning, June 6, 1955, at his home of a heart attack. He was born December 29, 1902. He was married December 8, 1925, to Miss Ellen Squainey, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Dennis, Atchison, Kas, Paul and Dean Stone, Kansas City, Mo; one daughter, Mrs Doris Dowis, Sheridan, four grandchildren; his mother, Mrs Almeda Stone, Sheridan; and a half brother, W.G. Stone, St Louis. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Sheridan Christian Church conducted by Rev L.B. Day of Maryville. Interment was in the Orrsburg Cemetery.

She was born Sept 19, 1905, in Parnell, to Samuel and Josephine Hubell Miller.

She married Orlie Cecil Stutesman, Nov 24, 1926, in Cheyenne, Wyo., who preceded her in death.

Stutesman, Grace Hawk - Kate Grace Hawk Stutesman, 94, died Friday, Oct 15, 1993 at a nursing home in Vancouver, Wash.

Born Aug 10, 1899 in Parnell to George B. and Addie Rauch Hawk, Parnell, she was a homemaker.

She married Eugene (Gene) Stutesman on Aug 10, 1921 and moved from Missouri in 1935 to Hoquiam, Wash. The couple moved to Vancouver in the early 1940s.

Ms [Mr?]Stutesman worked as a burner's helper in the Vancouver Shipyard during War World II.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include seven sons, Mervin, Harlan and Marion Stutesman, all of Vancouver, Wash, Drexel Stutesman, Aberdeen, Wash, Jerald Stutesman, Lemont, Ill, Darrel Stutesman, Tacoma, Wash, and Jack Stutesman, Long Beach, Wash; two daughters, Pauline Madison and Charlotte Schill, both of Vancouver, Wash; one sister, Nellie Jobst, Parnell; 30 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be held at 1 pm Wednesday, Oct 20, 1993 at Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel, Vancouver, Wash.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Vancouver, Wash.

Sullenberger, Naomi Sherrl Morehouse – Naomi Morehouse was born in Villisca, Iowa October 2, 1940 to Robert Truman and Coral Lorene Jackson Morehouse. It was noted at birth that Naomi had two broken legs and two broken arms. Later, her condition was found to be Ostegenesis Imperfection or OI. The Doctor told the family that she could not survive, and fed her only water the first week. Naomi showed her unquenchable spirit even then and surprised them all by surviving. The family was told that she wouldn’t live past the age of six or seven.

She was home tutored by a teacher from the Kendrick School and graduated from eighth grade and was the Taylor Co Valedictorian in 1955. Attended Villisca High School via telephone line to her home and graduated in 1959. She  attended other trade schools and worked at many different trades until she became a data processor for the State of Iowa in the license plate department. She graduated from Computer School in Des Moines with high honors in 1990.

She was indeed a survivor and in describing Naomi, family and friends use adjectives like “determined,” “amazingly independent” and feisty. Her tiny size of slightly over 3 feet was not in proportion to her giant spirit. Learning to drive her own car which was specially devised for her with hand controls and a special seat.

She married Jim Sullenberger August 18^th, 1990 and they made their home in Des Moines till her death. Her funeral was in Des Moines and burial was in a Bedford Cemetery, Friday afternoon.

She was baptized in the Advent Christian church, August 29, 1960 with Rev Boswell officiating. She went to heaven to be with the Lord, whom she loved, July 10, 2001. Survivors include her husband Jim of Des Moines, one sister Neva Lucille Morehouse of Stanton, one brother Dean Morehouse of St Joe, Mo., many nieces, nephews, friends and one special friend Nelda Rohem. Three aunts Ruby Gross, Adaline Campbell and Sue Morehouse.

Delbert Leroy Surplus, son of Charles Surplus and Jessie Brummett Surplus was born at Parnell, Mo, September 25, 1913. He grew to maturity in the Parnell and Sheridan communities where he attended the public school and was a part of the various community activies.

On November 12, 1938 he was united in marriage to Garland Naill at Creston, Iowa and they have made their home on the farm in the Blockton area with the exception of one year lived in Bedford, Iowa. They had shared 50 years together.

His life's occupation was farming. he enjoyed the farm life and had been a part of the change it had made since the time that he was married. He met the challenge of the times; the seasons; the methods of both tilling and conserving the soil; he was a patient man and his pleasing personality made him one who was able to make friends and keep them in his large circle of friendship. One of his great pleasures was pitching horse shoes; and in this activity he was able to extend his friendship beyond the usual boundaries of his home community.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Elby Surphus and two sisters, Thelma Nelson and Elma Berg.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Garland of the home; two sisters, Estelle Naill and Eloise Smyser; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She married Marvin O. "Pluve" Surplus on July 3, 1929. They lived in Burlington Junction before moving to Twin Falls, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and five brothers.

Survivors include three sons, Robert, Parkland, Wash; Harland, Wendall, Idaho and Jimmy, Yelm, Wash; twin sisters, Cora Bodenstab, Twin Falls, Idaho, and Clora Matthews, Filer, Idaho; several grandchildren.

Swaney, Jean, 87, passed away, Wednesday, August 9, 2006, at Parkdale Manor Care Center, in Maryville, Missouri. Jean was born in Pickering, Missouri, August 19, 1918, the daughter of Charles G. and Bertha L. (Sadler) Swinford. She was a graduate of Pickering High School. She was a member of the Pickering Christian Church. Jean married Albert Maurice Swaney, April 4, 1936, in Maryville. They farmed in the Pickering and Hopkins area until 1997, when they moved to Maryville. They celebrated sixty-six years of marriage in 2002, prior to Albert’s death in that year. Jean was an artist, well known for her oil paintings, including landscapes, still life and a number of commissioned paintings of homes and farmsteads. Her work won awards at various art shows. Jean also pursued various other artistic interests over the years, such as leather tooling and ceramics. For many years she sang for funerals in the area. From her early years and throughout her life she demonstrated a dedication to helping others in times of sickness and hardship. Being a good neighbor was very important. She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Charles Edward (Ed) Swaney her parents and sister, Pauline Smith. Survivors include her older son, Gary Swaney and his wife, Barbara (Anderson) Swaney of Sioux City, Iowa; daughter in law, Margaret (Barrett) Swaney of Osceola, Iowa; two grandsons and their wives: Kevin and Teresa Swaney, Sioux City; Garth and Beth Swaney, Frankfort, Illinois; two granddaughters, Lori Miller of Lincoln, Nebraska; Dyan Swaney, West Allis, Wisconsin and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to his mother he is survived by his devoted wife, Christy Rose (Schafer) Szabo whom he married on March 4, 2000, loving son, Zachary Joseph Szabo of the home, sister, Elizabeth Schroder, Bonner Springs, KS, brothers, Joe Szabo Reisterstown, MD, Chuck Szabo, Columbia, PA, Steve Szabo, Kennesaw, GA, four nieces and four nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
