CHLOE DUKES Chloe Ethel Dukes was born March 12, 1896 on a farm northwest of Sheridan, Mo. She died at Bedford Manor on June 26, 1991. Her parents were Mary Arbella and Francie Wilson. On November 12,1913 she was married to Ora Dukes; a loving commitment that endured for nearly 70 years, until his death in 1983.
Ten children were born to Chloe and Ora, three of them dying in infancy and a son, Carroll, who died of leukemia when he was four years old. The other six children, Lowell, Wilber, Helen, Harold, Charles and Glenn, with their spouses and grandchildren, have enjoyed Chloe's love, her concern and her friendship almost to the day of her death.
In her lifetime Chloe lived in many houses and several communities. As a child she lived briefly in North Platte, Neb., Wilcox, Mo., and mostly in Sheridan, Mo. She and Ora lived on several farms in the Sheridan area, before they purchased a farm north of Sheridan on the Iowa side of the line in 1948. In 1962, they moved to a home in Bedford on Central Street, later to "the little house behind the library", and finally to Bedford Manor in 1981. Each location, whether old or new, small or large, weathered or painted, primitive or comfortable, became a home of warmth and cheer when Chloe moved in. During her last 10 years, while living at Bedford Manor, she always referred to her home as "down home". Visitors felt her friendly welcome as she invited them into her home, wherever it was.
Chloe was involved in the work  and  worship of the church throughout her life. She was a member of the Bedford United Methodist Church at the time of her death.
She is survived by her six children; son-in-law George Guhl; daughters-in-law, Harriett, Ardys, Gerry, Louise and Donna; 14 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.
Her habits of making the best of every circumstance, enjoying life to the fullest, and sharing her love with those around her, along with a deep faith in God, are a pattern for living, treasured by her descendants and friends. BEDFORD TIMES-PRESS, Bedford, Iowa, Jul 17, 1991
