Obituary

Death of Mr. J. C. Powell

Died, on Wednesday morning, the 13th inst., at Waukesha Springs, Wisconsin, Mr. J. [ohn] C. Powell, of disease of the kidneys, in the 34th year of his age.

Mr. Powell was born in Indiana on the 12th of August, 1847, and had resided in the adjoining county of Taylor for about ten years. He had lived in this city only since last April but during the past three years had divided his time mainly between the business of the Citizens Bank of Bedford and the Hopkins Bank of this city, acting as cashier of the latter for one year, and assisting the cashiers of both institutions much of the remaining portion of the time. It would but feebly express the sentiments of this community to say that he was highly esteemed. He was much more than this. His life was singularly pure and upright and he deservedly enjoyed the reputation of being one whom no temptation could induce to swerve from the line of strict integrity, nor could any influence deter him from the performance of a duty.

His death occurred at Waukesha Springs, whither he had gone for treatment, accompanied by his devoted wife, whose presence soothed his last moments. He had been suffering for more than a year from an exceedingly painful and distressing malady and had some time ago visited Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in search of relief. Recently he had gone to Milwaukee and Waukesha, where the most skillful treatment had proved unavailing, although it was then believed that had treatment been attempted a few months earlier a recovery might have been made. On Tuesday morning of last week Mr. A. Goodsill received a telegram from Mrs. Powell [Margaret McElroy], asking him to come to Waukesha, as it seemed impossible that Mr. Powell could live. Mr. Goodsill started the same evening, but death reached the bedside before he arrived there. The remains were brought to this city on Saturday morning, accompanied by Mrs. Powell and Mr. and Mrs. Goodsill, and were interred at the cemetery at four o’clock p. m., of that day. A large concourse of people followed the remains to their last resting place and the services at the grave were conducted by Rev. John Moorehead, pastor of the M. E. church.  On Sunday Rev. R. A. McKinley, of Bedford, preached the funeral discourse at the Presbyterian Church, in the presence of a large congregation.

The sympathies of the entire community go out to the bereaved family of the deceased, and in his death the loss of a valued citizen, a steadfast friend and a good neighbor is deeply regretted.
